NPT signed in 1968 set out to control and monitor who had nuclear weapons. Peaceful use of nuclear energy.North Korea pulled out of NPT in 2003.Israel is believed nuclear weapons. India, Pakistan, North Korea and Israel are the only states not members of NPT. Realists argue that NPT doesn’t work and does not guarantee security. See it is an argument that can be broken. Ex- Iran is in non-compliance.No prevention techniques only punishment in terms of sanctions which damages reputation. Liberals think NPT works because it does exactly what is designed to do. Complex interdependence- states are connected to many different states on various levels. Ex- security, trade, environment, transportation, education, technology.Great Depression- example of complex interdependence being a bad thing economically. Complex interdependence makes states vulnerable, entangles alliances.Ex- WWI immediate issue was between Austria and Serbia. Alliances brought other powers. When Germany invaded Belgium, Britain had to get involved. How powerful are international organizations? Realists- they are only as powerful as the countries that make them upLiberals- creates long term relationships and cooperation will
