States are naturally going to seek hegemony. 1871- German unification- West: Great Britian, France, Netherlands. East: Austria, Russia, Ottoman Empire.Weak central Europe was a nice buffer, geography is crucial. Otto Von Bismark- power politics, goal to unify Germany and make it a strong state. Power transition theory- by early 1900’s Britians power declines, Germany becomes stronger. There is incentive for war between the two. A period of power transition is where you would expect to see war. Another view- Germany launching a preventive war to stop Russia from being a power state. WWI brought down 4 empires- Russia, Ottoman, Austria Hungarian, German. Pyrrhic victory- the costs of being victorious are so high that they really lost.Multi polarity leads to a free for all. Realists did not agree with the League of Nations, too idealistic 1935- Italy invaded Ethiopia, 50 of 54 League members condemned Italy as aggressive. Oil was not put into sanctions against Italy. First thing Hitler did was pull Germany out of the League of Nations (1933)1936- Hitler re-militarized the Rhineland1938- Germany annexed Austria. Sept- Munich conference. Germany was seeking hegemony American goal was to democriaze Germany.Soviet satellites- communist statesUS & USSR two strongest powers after WWIIMarshall Plan- 3 western zones of Germany, make 1 economic zone and have their own currency. 1949-1990 Germany divided between democratic west (Federal Republic of Germany) communist east (democratic peoples of Germany) NATO- military alliance of western powers.
