ReferencesSTRATEGY SCENARIO JOAN REED MNEMONICS Individual Scenario # 1 Strategy: Mnemonics Content: Indian Tribes of the United States Title: Mnemonics for Social Studies Time Required: 3 hours Number of Participants: 15 Target Audience: High School Students interested in Indian Tribes. Goal of Activity: To allow students to create a story, poem, rhythmical, loci (rooms in a house) that will help them to memorize the names of the many indian tribes in the U.S. The activity will later tie into mapping of Indian tribes. Goal of Script: Students will typically not be familiar with the name of this strategy. Generally students attempt to learn the names without knowing any technique or strategy to help them remember the names. This technique will reduce the burden of memorization. Learning Outcomes: (Gagne’s Intellectual Skills): Verbal Information, Cognitive Strategies, and Attitude. Learning Outcomes: (Bloom’s Taxonomy): Knowledge, Comprehension, Synthesis, and Evaluation. Learner Characteristics: These are the usual high school students. They typically have poor memorization skills. This will be an aid for this assignment and for many others. Entry Skills: None Setting: Classroom Media: Paper, pencil, textbook and maps, if needed.Process: 1. The instructor will teach the names of the tribes in the U.S. 2. A map will be presented to show the locations of the various tribes. 3. Guide the learners by using various examples of mnemonic devices. 4. Allow the learners to practice each of the mnemonics using assigned topics. 5. Allow the learners to choose the technique they are most comfortable with and create a mnemonic for all tribes. 6. Practice with other students to memorize the tribes. 7. Exchange techniques with other learners. 8. Give an assessment asking them to name all of the tribes using the mnemonic. Strategy Assessment: This strategy will work well with trying to memorize so many names of tribes. Any other technique would probably take more time and require a different approach. This assignment is “rote memory” but will be utilized later. Since they are creating their own technique, the strategy will be more successful because they will retain more information that way.
