Bec Giffen Title Doubling Number Objective SWBAT understand the concepts of doubling numbers think of examples of things in their lives that could be doubled and apply different strategies for adding whole numbers Preassessment Question What do you think happens when something is doubled EARL s GLE s Grade 2 EALR 1 The student understands and applies the concepts and procedures of mathematics Component 1 1 Understands and apply concepts and procedures from number sense GLE 1 1 7 Apply appropriate strategies and use tools for adding and subtracting whole numbers Materials Magic Pot items markers paper clips cubes Manipulatives like plastic cubes paper drawing materials Hat Room arrangement Sit together on floor for initial group instruction discussion Desks arranged in groups of four for work on magic pot riddles Accomodations I will put students who have ADD or ADHD together and give them direct assistance so that they understand the assignment and what s expected of them I ll read directions and coach them while they think of something they could double for the assignment Procedures Step 1 I will read the story Two of Everything about people who find a magic pot that whatever they drop into it doubles I will then give examples by dropping things into a hat and ask students to predict how many will be produced if the hat is a magic hat I will hold up things in the classroom and ask students to tell me how many of each we would have if they were dropped in the magic hat I will write these on the board so they can get a visual of the math equation 1 1 2 pieces of chalk etc Step 2 I ll explain to the students that they re going to make a magic pot riddle book Each student will make one page of the book They are to write a number sentence that goes with the riddle They must show how they solved the problem using pictures symbols and words I ll let them use manipulatives if they need them to figure out their riddles I ll walk around and make sure they are on track and using a reasonable number of items Step 3 I will have students work with a partner at their table and instruct them to take turns reading and trying to solve each others riddles Step 4 I ll collect riddles and bind them together in a book for students to look at and practice with later We will join again to discuss their riddles some will do a show and tell of their riddles Post assessment I will collect the riddles and look at level of understanding of concept Please note I used the book Investigations in Number Data and Space Coins Coupons and Combinations Mathematical Thinking at Grade 2 as a resource for this lessons
