Nicole Coots Tribal Lesson Opportunity Cost 6th Grade Time Length 20 minutes GLE EALR 4 4 History Uses history to understand the present and plan for the future Learning Objective Students will watch a YouTube video created by a member of the Puyallup Tribe Students will then participate in a discussion of the opportunities and costs of European Americans immigrating to North America to gain a better understanding of the economic term opportunity cost Students Version of Learning Objective I will participate in a group discussion using a guided handout to evaluate the opportunities and costs associated with Europeans Immigrating to North America Materials Access to the internet speakers and projector to show the YouTube video guided handout Special Accommodations Students with visual or hearing impairments may need to move around the room to be able to be closer to the screen or speakers Students with processing delays may need to see the video before their classmates to be able to digest the material Students with speech or language disorders may want to see the video and review the guided questions with an education assistant or volunteer so they feel more comfortable sharing in the group Native American students may need to be primed ahead of time because this is may be an emotional issue for them to discuss with nonNative peers A suggestion for them to consider might be an all Native student group rather than heterogeneous grouping It s important to realize the suffering and hardships Native Americans feel as a real result of the intentional de culturalization by European American Having private check ins with students is probably the best way to gage their comfort level If students are not comfortable with discussing the opportunity cost of European American immigration the lesson should be changed to discuss other opportunities and costs Agenda Introduction of opportunity cost Short Video Discussion Groups Journal Write Share Out Activities Time Phase 1 Introduction 2 min Every decision that is made comes with opportunities and costs Questions What are opportunities Examples go to college go to Disneyland What are the costs associated with these choices College not starting a family rights away huge student debt Disney waste of money miss school ect Today we are going to discuss the opportunity cost of the immigration of European American whites Phase 2 YouTube video 5 min After the video students may be eager to share Some students may know of the presenter and want to share their experiences If this is the case allow time Remember to allow students to move around the room if they are having trouble hearing or seeing Video takes 5 minutes Link http www youtube com watch v 84sOX CbbOM Phase 3 Discussion Groups 10 min Pass out handout and give students the groups they will be working with Review group agreements and talk about picking roles Also remind students we are thinking about the opportunities and costs of immigration on Native peoples Phase 4 Share out 3 min Attached Guided Group Work Form Reflection Who was missing and how will they get the learning What went good bad to remember for next time this is taught What else do I need to remember for tomorrows lesson What did I tell the kids I bring in What were they especially interested in Guided DiscussionOpportunity Cost Names Choose group roles Reader and Recorder Write all ideas Time keeper Watches the clock and keeps the group on task Deep thinker Asks questions and makes classmates support their ideas with evidence Peace keeper If group members are getting upset this person intervenes What opportunities arose from the immigration of European Americans What were the costs of the immigration of European Americans Form an Essential Understanding of the opportunity costs of European immigration on Native tribes If time allows discuss other opportunity costs of historic events Ideas include farming hunting and gathering slavery war having a pet
