data ROOM ARRANGEMENT Students are seated at their tables MATERIALS NEEDED Field Trip handout Visual organizer EALRs and GLEs Make the connections clear and specific GLE 1 4 3 Understand how data can be organized Learning Goals What do you expect students to learn and be able to do from this lesson Given a lesson in which students vote on their number one choice of field trip destination students will gather organize and analyze their data with the facilitation of the teacher to demonstrate their ability to find the answer to a question by analyzing the data PROCEDURES Label each step in the process Activating Prior Knowledge Disequilibration Elaboration Crystallization Introduction Preassessment Do some activity to see what your students know Tie it to EALRs GLEs Yesterday we began planning our first field trip of the year by making a list of your suggestions which were all based on our theme of harvest Let s review the list farmers market pumpkin patch apple cider mill corn maze and a local organic farm So we are going to anonymously vote what do I mean by anonymous students respond So I will hand out a small piece of paper and you will write down your number one choice We will then collect all the votes to determine which one is the most popular You have about 3 minutes to independently choose your choice of field trip write it on your paper and hand it in to me You may begin now teacher hands out paper and students vote 5 minutes Activity Include formative assessments as appropriate Imagine that you were writing this for a substitute to teach Be detailed and specific Include specific questions you will ask students and some of the answers you would expect from them Include some other teacher talk Alright so now I have all of your votes in this basket and we are going to tally them up independently I am now going to pass out this handout you will notice that there are two columns one of them says Where and the other one says Number of votes What do you think you need to write in the blank column under Where students respond the names of all five places we are voting on Right so take some time now about 3 minutes to write down the names of all five places they are written on the board for you to refer to if you d like students take about 3 minutes to fill in the left column of their handout When I start reading the votes out loud your job is to keep track on your handout the votes What are some ways that people are going to keep track of the votes on their handout students respond draw each vote tally checkmark x etc Which side of the column will you record your tally s students respond the right side under Where Alright now that we are ready to begin organizing the votes are there any questions teacher answers questions as needed and then begins reading votes out loud 10 minutes Alright so by looking at the handout which place got the most votes for a field trip students respond We will continue to plan the field trip later but right now I want us to focus on the way we gathered our information organized it and now we are going to analyze it So on the back of your Field Trip handout that you just wrote on I want you to make a chart like this one show visual organizer on board or overhead allow about 2 minutes for students to illustrate it Drawing charts are helpful when we are trying to organizer our thoughts or information We are going to title this chart Voting for field trip destination So the first column reads Gathered our information How did we gather our information students respond we all made anonymous votes by writing our number one choice on a piece of paper So go ahead and write that on your paper allow a few minutes for students to fill in the first column Now let s read the second column it says Organized it How de we organize our votes students respond we tallied them up in our Field Trip handout Right in order for us to keep track of which place got the most votes we tallied each vote on a piece of paper This way anybody reading this chart would be able to know which place got the most votes So take a few minutes to write in the second column about how we organized our information allow a few minutes for students to fill in the second column And for the third column it reads Analyzed read what it tells us So let s flip back to our Field Trip handout where you wrote in Which place got the most votes Which place got the least votes Which place got more votes than the corn maze Which place got less votes than the pumpkin patch allow time for students to answer all questions So by reading all the information we gathered and organized we can find the answers to our questions So someone remind us what our question for this task was student responds Where are we going And did we answer our question students answer yes we re going to 15 minutes Closure Great so you see that when you have a lot of information like we had a lot of votes it is helpful to organize it in a way that you can understand it So we organized all of our votes so we could tell which one got the most votes Do you think we would have been able to tell which place got the most votes if I just read them out loud without you writing them down students no Why not students because we wouldn t have been able to remember them all etc So to end I want you to write down one question on the back of your Field Trip handout wherever you have space to the prompt What question do you have about the insert field trip destination You will use this question to gather information during the field trip and organize it so that you have an answer to your question similar to what we did today Any questions 5 10 minutes Time Chart Time 5 minutes Time 25 minutes Time 5 10 minutes What Teacher Does Introductory Activity Teacher reviews previous day and explains how voting will take place With the input from students teacher explains how to fill in chart with labels With the input from students teacher explains how to fill in chart with tally marks based on votes Teacher facilitates discussion on how students gathered organized and analyzed their data in order to answer their initial question What Students Do Students anonymously vote on their number one choice for field trip Students fill in chart with labels …
