Week 5 Reflections on Practice Workshop Preparation and Draft Outline for Thursday February 8 Topic Our topic this week is assessment Special Note I told the group that starts in the computer room that this week I would spend the computer time with them this week however due to unforeseen circumstances I won t be able to do that but instead will be in the computer room from 8 9 to provide help to anyone in the morning computer group who needs assistance with video editing If you need assistance getting your web portfolio started you are also welcome to come in then although Mac s offer to help on Tuesday s and Friday s is a much more flexible one Also be aware that next week February 15 will be dedicated solely no new projects to moving towards finishing the work you began the past three weeks 2 video clips and the web portfolio Location This week will be organized like the last two spending half your time in the computer classroom and half your time in Sem 2 as follows below same groupings Special Request You will be going back to your videotapes to pull out 2 5 minutes of footage that highlights your teaching instruction strategies To that end Media Loan should have 13 cameras on reserve for us to check out so I am requesting that those who have the OK to check out cameras under the MIT year 2 account help us check them out again you can either go right to Media Loan and check out 1 or 2 or stop by the computer classroom first and see what our need is We also will need some help from the 10 30 computer group in returning the cameras to Media Loan at noon Preparing for the Computer Classroom Bring your videotape unless you have already downloaded all your video footage to a computer in the computer classroom If you have a camera to review your footage ahead of time look for and note the portions of the tape that are most clearly connected to your use of instructional strategies Amy Greene and others will be available to help you as needed and the idea is to give you as much time as possible to work on developing this second video clip Again be sure to copy your finished product onto a thumb drive or a secure server or to copy the video in progress onto our MIT firewire drive One other important thought if you have not finished your first video clip yet work on that first before beginning this second clip As with the classroom management clip you have a lot of room for creativity in putting together this clip but do follow these basic guidelines You should show yourself you students using at least two different instructional strategies Use titles or voice over to let the viewer know the names of the strategies being demonstrated on the tape Make the clip at least 2 minutes long but no more than 5 minutes long The final product will be exported to create a quicktime movie which will then be linked to your web based portfolio Preparing for the Workshop Locate and bring to class two lesson plans from your fall student teaching that include assessment strategies that you were able to use and that you have some recollection of using ideally but not essential you would have actual data or a summary of the data from your use of the assessment If possible photocopy or print copies of these lesson plans so you can mark up and write notes on them without defacing the copies in your student teaching portfolio Bring to class a lesson plan or at least a definite description of your intended outcome for one of the lessons in your Transformative Unit Plan i e a plan from the unit you are developing in your Monday gradeband work You will be developing an assessment strategy for this lesson so if you have a plan that doesn t yet have a completed assessment that would be ideal Workshop Outline Draft We will be analyzing your assessment practices using a framework that borrows some key ideas from Richard Stiggins First I will briefly talk about the concept of student centered assessment the idea that your classroom assessments should be developed with a primary purpose of giving students feedback that they can use to help themselves as opposed for example to assessing primarily for the purpose of giving grades I will also briefly share Stiggins ideas about organizing your learning outcomes achievement targets in his language into the categories of know reason performance skill product and dispositions Then I will introduce the four broad categories of assessment strategies Stiggins uses selected response essay performance assessment and personal communication After this introduction each of you will review your 2 lesson plans identifying the outcomes the categories that best fits those outcomes and the assessment categories that your strategies best fit into I will then share some of the basic principles for constructing assessment items and ask you to use these principles to critique one assessment strategy from each of your lessons For the last portion of this workshop you will develop an assessment strategy for a lesson you are developing this quarter using a type of strategy you are somewhat unfamiliar with Based on your work today in which you review some of your assessment development from the Fall and have the chance to think about additional assessment strategies you will be writing a 1 2 page reflection on what you hope to do in the area of assessment during your Spring student teaching
