LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE Desiree Solso TITLE Different types of leaves CONTENT AREAS What areas of mathematics does this lesson cover Geometric Shape GRADE LEVEL Kindergarten KEY CONCEPTS Understanding how different geometric shapes of leaves Oval rectangle heart and circle can be used to identify different types of leaves and what type of three they come from ROOM ARRANGEMENT Room will be arranged in groups of four in a U shape in the room In the center front of the room will be a document camera or overhead Behind that will be a material or demonstration table Student s desks will be far enough behind the camera that everyone can easily see the board or overhead MATERIALS NEEDED Felt leaf shapes sage willow dogwood gray birch paper birch life oak madrone hawthorne black willow and magnolia Felt Geometric Shapes Oval Rectangle heart and circle Felt board Paper handout of geometric shape Contact paper String A variety of leaves that have already been pressed flat EALRs and GLEs Make the connections clear and specific 1 3 1 The student understands and applies the concepts and procedures of mathematics Understand and apply concepts and procedures from geometric sense Recognize the properties of familiar objects Learning Goals What do you expect students to learn and be able to do from this lesson Given class discussion and small group manipulations on the different geometric shapes of leaves student will be able to sort leaves into the correct categories according to their shape PROCEDURES Label each step in the process Activating Prior Knowledge Disequilibration Elaboration Crystallization Introduction Preassessment Do some activity to see what your students know Tie it to EALRs GLEs Previously students would have gathered leaves outside and the teacher would have flattened the leaves Using wood or foam blocks students would sort blocks according to their geometric shape oval rectangle heart and circle Teacher Talk Good Morning class Today we will be reviewing the shapes we have been learning all year the heart and circle and we will review our two new shapes the oval and rectangle The Oval is similar to the circle but it is longer and narrower while the circle is shorter and rounder You will each get a set of blocks and a place mat with the shapes oval rectangle circle and heart on it Once you have both of these items you will sort your blocks according to their shape When you have all of your blocks sorted raise your hand and either I or one of the aids in the classroom will come and view your shapes The checking of the activity is not done to correct the work of the student but rather to check their knowledge and to see how many of the shapes have been sorted correctly Activity Include formative assessments as appropriate Imagine that you were writing this for a substitute to teach Be detailed and specific Include specific questions you will ask students and some of the answers you would expect from them Include some other teacher talk Whole class would gather for circle time in which the teacher would have felt board already set up and felt board pieces of leaves and geometric shapes already cut out On the felt board you would have the four geometric shapes lines up across the top On your lap you will have the leaves Before starting the lesson you will review the shapes again their names and characteristics You will begin a comparison of leaf shapes to geometric shapes As you hold up the leaf shapes for the class you will ask the class to give a thumbs up if they thing is it X shape go with class majority however if they are incorrect go back at the end of the lesson and work through correcting it together Students will then return to their desk and will have a paper handout and a collection of pressed leaves on their desks Students will sort the leaves by shape into the correct area on their paper sheet Teacher Talk Lets gather on our circle for circle time Today we are going to be learning more and different shapes On my felt board you will see that I have the four different shapes that we were learning earlier the circle point to the shape as you say it rectangle heart and oval A circle is round and a little short A rectangle has four sides two short and two long The oval is similar to the circle but it is longer and thinner than the circle Today we are going to be seeing which leaf shapes would fit under the shapes that we have on the board When I hold up a leaf I will say a shape and then I want you to give a thumbs up if you think the leaf is that shape The first leaf we have is the grey birch do you think it s an oval This will continue through all the shapes and leaves Now that we have them all sorted lets take another look to see if we are correct correct and incorrect shapes by talking out loud the properties of the shape and comparing that to the properties of the leaf Now that we have compared leaves as a class you will compare leaves on your own On each of your desks there is a paper with four shapes on it and your leaves that you collected last week What I want you to do is to short your leaves according to their shape Closure Each student will be given eight small squares of contact paper and four labels that say oval rectangle circle heart Student will lay one piece of contact paper down with one label and match one leaf to the label and cover the leaf with the other contact paper After the pages are pressed together they can be hole punched and be hung in the window POST ASSESSMENT Make direct links to learning goals EALRs and GLEs Once the students have completed their hanging the teacher will be able to evaluate their work to see if they were able to correctly match the leaf to the correct label EALR GLE Beginning Emerging Proficient Student was able to Student was able to Students were able The student correctly match at correctly match two to correctly match understands least one leaf to the to three of the all four of the and applies correct label but leaves to the correct geometric shapes to the concepts was unable to shape label a corresponding and correctly connect leaf procedures of the rest of the mathematics leaves Understand and apply concepts and procedures from geometric sense Recognize the properties of familiar objects Evidence Task for Positive Impact on Student Learning The evidence could be a comparison between the students pre assessments and summative assessments You should make that comparison as the teacher but also need to begin to ask
