Title Calculator Math Objective SWBAT add and subtract whole numbers think of times they have used calculators apply different strategies and use tools for adding and subtracting whole numbers Preassessment Hand out calculators and ask students to add 5 and 4 etc to see who has a grasp on basic functions and who needs more instructions Materials 1 calculator per student paper colored pencils Room arrangement Sit together on floor for initial group instruction discussion Desks arranged in groups of four for work with calculators Accomodations I will put students who have ADD or ADHD together and give them direct assistance so that they understand the assignment and what s expected of them I ll read directions and coach them while they think of something they could double for the assignment Procedures Step 1 Students will sit on floor by the board and I will explain that mathematicians use a variety of tools to solve problems and to help them explain their thinking to others I will also remind them that they have been using tools too such as manipulatives pencil and paper and the calculator is just another tool to solve problems I ll ask students if they ve used a calculator in the past write examples on the board I ll hand out calculators and allow them to explore for a few minutes again I ll ask them about what they noticed Step 2 Back at their tables I will ask them to write four of their own problems and use the calculator to solve them Step 3 They will be partnered up with someone at their table They will trade papers with their partner and check to make sure the answers are correct If they agree they ll write a check If they disagree they ll write a question mark beside it After checking they will discuss with each other what they agreed and disagreed with Step 4 I will discuss with the students any questions they have Post assessment I will collect the sheets and analyze their understanding Please note I used the book Investigations in Number Data and Space Coins Coupons and Combinations Mathematical Thinking at Grade 2 as a resource for this lessons
