prepares pre service teachers in methods of instruction theory and concepts for the integration of the arts into other areas of the curriculum and for personal expression of the child through the arts The course is divided into studio hands on experiences and lecture discussion An integrated discipline based approach to arts education which allows students to become productive in and through the arts as well as to understand the world of art around them will be used This course is based on the Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements EALR s and Goals Resources including books materials and sample elementary student work will be available for use and or evaluation A camera may be helpful to record ideas of sample work The student will leave this class with knowledge of the EALRs including best practices and integration techniques and strategies have confidence and resources for planning and teaching quality art education leave this class with a knowledge of the elements of all the arts take with them concrete experiences of how to infuse subjects with the arts have experience with the integration process and accessing imagination alone and with others explore the development of process of developing imagination creativity and building blocks of fine arts have a working knowledge of the EARLs and state requirements Students with Disabilities If you need course an appointment with me as soon as possible Course Objectives The student will be able to Create art based on the elements in a discipline Identify the creative process and its role in producing art in a discipline Evaluate artistic expression based on the artistic vocabulary Respond to artwork based on the elements and principles of the arts with an open and inquiring attitude Respond to child art in a manner that protects each child s sense of self worth and promotes developmental growth Select or design learning experiences which stimulate sensory awareness and creative thinking teach arts concepts and develop skillful use of arts media and meet state EALRs Value the artwork from divergent cultures and individuals over time Make connections between the arts and life Integrate the arts concepts and learning into the wider school curriculum while maintaining the dignity of teaching the arts for art s sake Be able to discuss the relationship of this to program curriculum outlining how it all fits together Attendance Policy Students are required to attend all class sessions If you arrive late and or leave early you will have to make it up through additional work most likely entailing extra reading and a paper Missing two or more classes will result in an incomplete if requested in writing on or before the last day of class Phones and Beepers As a courtesy please turn off all phone or beeper sound signals during class If you must make a call please do so in another room during a break Assignments evidence to be gathered Art Notebook of resources and art projects Journal Lesson plans Evaluation is based on 40 Meaningful participation and conduct in class discussions and activities 30 Final presentation of arts integration using literature 30 minute presentation 20 Art Notebook with 4 sections Dance Music Visual art Journal notes 10 Written reflection and final self evaluation This is an experiential class It is important for students to Attend all classes on time Demonstrate a cooperative positive attitude Participate actively in class projects Be willing to take risks in learning Be prepared for every class reading writing research
