Title Number Strings this lesson comes after calculator math Objective SWBAT add more than two numbers by using their best strategies think of examples of times when they needed to add more than two numbers and apply strategies for adding whole numbers Preassessment I will provide a number of addition problems on the board and ask students to answer them EALR s and GLE s Grade 2 EALR 1 The student understands and applies the concepts and procedures of mathematics Component 1 1 Understands and apply concepts and procedures from number sense GLE 1 1 7 Apply appropriate strategies and use tools for adding and subtracting whole numbers Materials Manipulatives like plastic cubes Paper Pencils Drawing materials Number string sheets Room arrangement Sit together on floor for initial group instruction discussion Desks arranged in groups of four for work on number sheets Accomodations I will put students who have ADD or ADHD together and give them direct assistance so that they understand the assignment and what s expected of them I ll read directions and coach them while they think of the answers Procedures Step 1 I will write examples of number strings on the board and ask them to write down the answer I will ask students to raise their hand when they agree with the result I wrote on the board and ask them to raise their hand if they disagree When I write examples that amount to ten or less I will ask them to show me what they think the answers are by holding the same number of fingers up in front of them Students will write and solve their own number string problems Step 2 I will write 7 4 on the board and ask students to think of a story problem that could go with this number sentence I ll call on volunteers to give examples I ll ask them to think about how they would solve the problem I will call on volunteers remind them that I m looking for how they solved the problem not just the answer I ll write down their strategies on the board I ll ask if anyone else used that strategy I will write other problems on the board such as 5 3 and 4 8 3 I will emphasize using the strategy of looking for which numbers go together such as doubles and combinations with 10 I ll draw connecting lines when discussing combinations on the board Step 3 I ll give a few more examples that they will solve back at their tables I will explain the importance of showing their thinking how they matched numbers together etc They can use pictures numbers and words in each box Sheets to be handed out 5 4 3 1 6 9 8 9 1 7 3 9 4 3 2 1 9 7 4 3 7 5 5 3 9 1 3 4 2 1 Post assessment I will review and collect the problems that they created and the above ditto Please note I used the book Investigations in Number Data and Space Coins Coupons and Combinations Mathematical Thinking at Grade 2 as a resource for this lessons
