Transformative Unit Plan Due Monday March 12th 9 00 am Throughout winter quarter you are going to be learning many aspects of differentiating instruction for various groups of students and gaining insights about how to create a transformative environment where a diverse group of students are valued and accepted within the environment While you may learn and be assessed on your learning within various strands of the program one way of integrating your understanding is to prepare a unit plan that transforms instruction to be both accommodating and truly inclusive In essence this is a summative performance based assessment We put the word unit in quotes because we envision this as approximately 3 5 days of lessons though we are flexible if you need it to be longer We want you to be able to put your energies and focus on a small number of lessons rather than constructing a large quantity of topics to cover over a long period of time In this case quality not quantity is highlighted Important consideration when choosing the content make sure that at least some of it involves text That will help you in considering how to differentiate for English Language Learners Selecting a topic for you unit plan Topic selection should be done in conjunction with your Monday morning gradeband faculty But generally choose a set of curriculum materials and or a topic or set of lesson plans as your focus Elementary folks need to choose a social studies topic because it will also serve a function in your grade band work Similarly secondary math endorsing folks need to select math People who are not doing grade band work those working with Scott on Monday mornings around a particular content area can choose one of their endorsement areas Content Format of unit plan The format of your unit is flexible That is it should be useful to you Scott s group will collectively discuss format But within that flexible format you need to include a Classroom and Student Characteristics description Instructional Plan for each lesson that is lesson plans for each day and an Instructional Plan Rationale for the unit Also include assessments that will provide you with information about the degree to which your students have achieved your learning targets More details on the Classroom and Student Characteristics description This is an important aspect of the differentiation focus we have for this unit You will need to construct your classroom artificial students for whom you need to differentiate These students will come from Sherry s work with you on teaching IEP included students as well as Anita s work with you on teaching for social justice which includes ideas of teaching English Language Learners culturally responsive teaching and transformative multicultural education So as part of your artificially constructed student body please attend to the following Create lessons that are relevant both in content and instructional practice to the students in your classroom which is racially religiously sexually and socioeconomically diverse and include students with various abilities Include transformative multicultural education that challenges traditional hierarchies and positions of privilege this is not necessarily limited to race and class but also language religion gender sexual orientation or ability Include explicit attention to increasing the likelihood that students will be accepted and valued by other students which rarely comes if teachers simply rely on proximity or heterogeneous grouping without working on classroom climate Has at least 4 English Language Learners representing two different language groups Students who qualify for special education services in 6 different areas note lesson modifications in your unit plan should include attention to just 2 of the 6 qualifications per lesson for a total of 3 lessons This is a weird construction as if you have different students on different days You can imagine though that the purpose is to give you a summative opportunity to demonstrate your ability to differentiate lesson plans based on student abilities Unit assessment This unit plan will be assessed by your grade band faculty using parts 1 5 in the Pedagogy Assessment Grade band faculty may also assess it with additional instruments Submitting your final unit plan Submit your final unit plan to your Monday morning grade band faculty on Monday March 12th 9 00 am
