Cultural Encapsulation Assignment for Spring MIT 2007 9 Affinity based Social Issue Individual Narrative You will write a 3 5 page Individual Narrative addressing the self in reference to the social issue of the community chosen by your group see Group assignment The narrative needs to speak to how your worldview and cultural values interface with your chosen community This paper should address your points of tension as well as your points of flow as though you were engaged cross culturally with the community You should reflect on prior and present experiences that speak to the quality of the interface between yourself and the chosen community and social issue You should speak to your strengths and your areas in need of further support This is a personal account of your strengths and your challenges and should generate a map that allows you to move towards increased cultural competency as a classroom teacher and in relationship to your teaching and classroom management strategies This paper should include a section that addresses curriculum development The assignment will be used in coordination with your group project Cross Cultural Narrative Each student will complete a 4 6 page narrative that focuses on two cross cultural experiences you witnessed and perceived as unfair to another person of a different culture The narrative is about an experience where you have a regret regarding your action in reference to the other person and about an experience where you have no regret regarding your action in reference to the other person The narrative should have the following two parts Part one A description of the experience what made it a cross cultural Why was it unfair to the other person What action did you take or not take and why How could or would you use yourself differently from this retrospective position to support the other person Why did you choose that stance at that time Part two Based on your readings the past two quarters what strengths do you now have that would better serve you and support your position as an agent of change What areas are still in need of further support The narrative should be 4 6 pages in length Craft a strategic plan to address these areas in relationship to your future work as a classroom teacher Affinity based Social Issue Group Task Using one of the following communities race sexual orientation ability disability class religious affiliation gender as presented in your text Readings for Diversity and Social Justice your group will pick a current social issue affecting the respective community The overall goal of the activity is to define the issue and how your group might approach the issue and the affected community as agents of change The central questions of the task are How do you as an individual and then as a group orient yourself to a community different than your own What do you need to do at the individual and group level to approach such a community What exists at the interface or boundary of your group and the other community that affords you an understanding of the complexity of your two communities Over the course of the quarter your group will conduct a literature survey of your chosen social issue for your chosen community The literature survey should reflect current writings in popular media professional journals and texts and Internet sites with a balanced distribution of each Informal and formal interviews are an option but formal interviews must include Human Subjects Review and Informed Consent This literature survey should be used to educate the members of the group on the social issue The group will complete a joint bibliography divided by source eg professional journals Internet blogs etc and included with your group paper At the group level each group will develop a 10 12 page Collective Narrative that describes the community of choice the social issue the collective strengths of your group and the areas that need further support based on your individual narratives and work from the past two quarters The collective paper will speak to these joint strengths and how they fold into your collective strengths as agents of change This paper should propose a possible action plan and your rationale for the action plan based on your literature survey and your group strengths The paper should reflect on classroom practices and how you would approach different levels of the systems from the individual to the community The final portion of this paper should attend to the process of your group work and the development of your group over the course of the quarter
