Interdisciplinary Curriculum Development Project Criteria Major Goal MIT teacher candidates will create a two week integrative interdisciplinary conceptually based unit built around a guiding question THAT INCLUDES the concept of sustainability AND that promotes equity embraces diversity develops critical and creative thinking and leaves no child behind This unit should represent best practices as discussed in Daniels and Bizar and as represented in the Washington State Pedagogy Assessment and Standard V found in WAC 181 78A 270 Specifically this unit will address Standard 5 1c All students learn subject matter content that integrates mathematical scientific and aesthetic reasoning The Description of Practice for this standard states Teacher candidates design adapt developmentally appropriate instruction that is informed by the following GLE s curriculum standards enduring understanding of content and depth of thinking Standard 5 3d All students are prepared to be responsible citizens for an environmentally sustainable globally interconnected and diverse society The Description of Practice for Standard 5 3 states Teacher candidates merge knowledge of learning child adolescent development and their diverse learners with a repertoire of teaching and communication strategies to make instructional decisions They seek information from multiple communities consider student learning in the context of social political environmental and economic systems and create opportunities for students to participate in responsible civic engagement including developmentally appropriate self governance Final Project A two week integrative interdisciplinary conceptually based unit that might be used during student teaching These plans will reflect best practice and meet Washington State criteria for successfully demonstrating a positive impact on student learning Curriculum Unit Requirements Use this form to evaluate projects Curriculum Unit Includes Statement of purpose and major goals Descriptive sketch of anticipated characteristics of students with whom you will be working age range probable developmental level socioeconomic and ethnic groups differing developmental and physical needs 5 2b c Brief description of behavior management plan or approaches you intend to use 5 4c Conceptual network web or diagram 5 1a c Theme and content possibilities web or diagram 5 1a c Web or statement of examples of students likely pre existing 5 1a concepts about what you plan to explore Daily two week plan of goals include EALR GLE or FRAMEWORKS objectives procedures materials teaching strategies you plan on using e g small groups individual research learning stations teacher presentation experiment hands on exploration etc These lessons should provide evidence of challenging students existing schemata and developing critical thinking skills 5 1b 5 2 a b Location in Curriculum Unit page s Comments Sample of reading lesson appropriate to grade level and subject requirements 5 1a Sample of writing lesson appropriate to your grade level and subject 5 1a Sample of math lesson appropriate to grade level and subject matter requirements 5 1c Indication of attention to brainbased learning preferences or working around the quadrant wheel 5 3a Differentiation for special needs and ability levels 5 3a Evidence of Multicultural Perspectives 5 3a Building community within the classroom 5 3b Integrating community outside the classroom and school 5 3c Example of at least one formative and one summative assessment including a scoring rubric 5 2a For elementary grade band Plan must be social studies or science based plus another discipline An annotated bibliography of tradebooks to read with unit and teacher resources 5 1a 5 2c An annotated bibliography of internet sites appropriate for the unit 5 2d
