Additional Hormones- Human Growth HormoneThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.- Creatine (supplement, not FDA regulated-regenerates muscles)- Androsterodone - DHEA- EPO (associated with cycling- increases red blood cells –stroke risk, too much blood pressure)IV. Blood DopingReinfuse own blood before a game/competition (dangerous for blood pressure)V. Detection (Urianalysis)A. Enzyme Immunoessay EIA):How does it work? Like pregnancy test – urianalysis. (particular reaction occurs if banned substance found)B. Gas Chromatography/ Mass Spectrometry:-More expensive-Urine vapor and test it-Compounds separate- match bands to sample and identify compounds-To know which anabolic steroids because we would all test positive for it but this test shows us which one (natural in body or not)C. Sensitivity/Specificity:-Sensitivity: How much of the drug needs to be in body before it is detected-Specificity: How likely to give false-positiveD. Detection Periods:View table 12.3 Page 309-Cocaine: VERY SHORT detection period. -Anabolic Steroids: LONG detection period. If fat-soluble – longer periodV. Glues, Solvents and other InhalentsWe still do not know impacts in young childrenUse in 8th through 12th grade: Marjuana, cocaine and LSD use increase with age while Inhhalents use decreases (graduate from inhalents to marijuana?)In Latin America a lot of inhalents use because not as wealthy so it is cheaper.VI. Inhalents:-Depressants-Onset faster than alcohol-Effects not as long3 Major Groups:A. Gaseous Anesthetic:-Nitrous Oxide: i.Nontoxic. ii.In Whipping cream. iii.Used at the dentist (laughing gas). iv.Increase car performance. v.No chronic effects BUT high exposure may cause anemia-Ether: i.Discovery was a medical breakthrough. Before it there was no general anesthesiaii.Flammableiii.Used for Enginesiv.During prohibition people were drinking it instead of alcohol.v.Used to manufacture meth (that’s why some explosions occur in meth labs)B. Volatile Solvents:View Table 13.4 page 329-Over 1000 household items can be used as inhalents (benzene, Tulane)-Acute toxicity-Petrolium based so casues:-Kidney Damage-Peripheral nerve damage-Headaches-Soffucation-Sudden Sniffing Death Syndrome (can happen at first useGlues cause irritation. Found in markers, manufacturers trying to change composition.C. Nitrates:-Amyl nitrate: treat angina, increases blood flow to heart-Butyl Nitrate: not used medically-Linked to cancer (Kaposi’s Carcinoma)-Used for anal intercourse-Are vasodilators so can’t be used with other meds (e.g. Viagra, amphetamines)-FlammableInhalents linked to failing grades, problems in school etc.VII. Damages:-Brain: brain shrinkage (looks like alzheimers)-Cerebral Cortex: personality changes-Cerebellum: loss of coordination, memory etc-Optic nerve: toluene can cause loss of sight-Auditory Nerve: Toluene can cause loss of hearing-Blood: decrease oxygen to blood-Lungs: damage to lining and cells-Heart: Sudden sniffing death syndrome-Muscle: muscle wasting-Bone marrow: leukemia (benzene)-Peripheral Nervous System: numbness, paralysis.(nitrous oxide in whipping cream and hexane in glues)How can inhalant abuse be recognized? Page 330 “health Alert!”Gold paint is preferred by users.Raw sewage gasses inhaling (Jenkem/Human Waste Drug). Combination of human urine and excrement, left for awhile then sniff gasses from
