MICROBIO 160 September 11 2015 What is disease an abnormal condition of an organism that impairs bodily functions often used more broadly referred to any condition that causes discomfort dysfunction distress social problems and or death to the person afflicted or similar problems for those in contact with the person sometimes includes injuries disabilities disorders syndromes infections isolated symptoms deviant behaviors and atypical variations of structure and function while in other contexts and for other purposes these may be considered distinguishable categories Are these real diseases Yes Obesity Alcoholism Chronic Fatigue Syndrome PTSD Broad Categories of Diseases Infectious Disease Environmental Disease cigarette smoke radon lead poisoning Cancer can be all three pathogen mediated specific organism or combination of organisms Genetic Disease caused by abnormalities in an individual s genetic material genome e g Klinefelter s syndrome xxy chromosomes Down syndrome Turner syndrome We now have a better idea of how we currently define a disease The Scientific Method attempts to explain natural occurrences of the universe using a logical consistent systematic method of investigation Initial Observations and Questions Hypothesis and Predictions Experiments and Data Collection Analysis of the Data to test hypothesis Summarize Results tables graphs etc Discuss Limitation and Conclusions Identify Future Research Needs improvements further testing A theory is a well tested well documented explanation that is well supported by evidence Meat Maggots Experiment Aristotle theory that living things can come from nonliving things known as spontaneous generation Jean Baptist Val Helmont mice come from dirty rags rotting grains MICROBIO 160 September 11 2015 Important Milestones in Cell Biology Robert Hooke in 1665 first person to design a compound microscope and coined the term cell Anton van Leeuwenhoek in 1674 first person to make a single lens microscope and observe single celled organisms Schleiden and Schwann proposed the cell theory in 1838 cell biology research was Cell Theory forever changed States that 1 All life forms are made from one or more cells 2 The cell is the smallest form basic unit of life 3 Oh and cells spontaneously form 3 Cells develop from pre existing cells Spontaneous Generation Disproved Louis Pasteur in 1859 disproved spontaneous generation overall late confirming the germ theory of disease and inventing the process of pasteurization The Modern Cell Theory All known living things are made up of cells The cell is the structural and functional unit of all living things All cells come from pre existing cells by cell division All cells are basically the same in chemical composition All energy flow metabolism and biochemistry of life occurs within cells The germ theory of disease also called the pathogenic theory of medicine proposes that microorganisms are the cause of many diseases Proven by Louis Pasteur between 1860 1864
