Lecture 1 Introductions and life expectancy What is cancer Aids HIV Cancer When the instructions the genes of a cell goes wrong the cell divides uncontrollably an abnormal growth of cells and doesn t die when it should There is still no cure for AIDS Life expectancy The average life expectancy is 78 years in the US while in Japan it s 83 The US continues to lag behind other countries despite spending more on health care Why do women live longer than men Lifestyle differences men are more likely to engage in risky behaviors Differences in biology protect women from heart disease Cardiovascular disease than in women women are biologically tougher than men female hormones ex heart attacks and strokes develop 10 years earlier in men Depressed men who attempt suicide are more successful than women The greatest threat Obesity related diseases are the greatest threat to life expectancy ex heart disease diabetes Increased life expectancy increased risk of developing cancer chronic diseases HIV infection also increases cancer risk However better drugs help increase life expectancy for those infected with HIV
