Susan Golden Meadow: was interesting in understanding how parents who did not sign to their deaf children effected them. Showed how important it is for parents to communicate with their children.Childhood Autistic DisorderI. Historical Perspectivea. Leo Kanner- 1st person to publish on classical autism. b. Hans Asperger- wrote no higher functioning Autistic children.II. Characteristicsa. Criteria for Diagnosis:i. Impaired social development. (gaze aversion, lack of desire for physical contact, appearance of deafness, bizarre repeated gestures)ii. Delayed/ deviant language.1. Echolalia: automatic repetition of vocalizations by other people either immediately after or delayed.iii. Insistence on sameness/ engagement in ritualistic, stereotypical behavior. iv. Impairment motor ability. 1. Score low on gross motor and fine motor skills. III. Apparent Change Incidenta. If intensive intervention can be begun before the age of two, then extreme progress can be made to bring the child to the same developmental stages as their peers by school age.IV. Genetic Basisa. Leo Conner: Believed that raising children in orphanages could have severely detrimental effect, therefore thought that poor parent-child relations resulted in autism. b. Michael Rutter: Located twin pairs where at least one of them had autistic disorder. If one of theidentical twins had autism then 60% also had it. For fraternal twins if one was diagnosed, none of their twins were also diagnosed. i. This demonstrated a substantial genetic component. Conferences where scientists would ask parents for their children’s brains in the case of early deaf so that they could study autistic disorder brains.b. Margaret Bauman accumulated many brains and study about 25 different brains to determine evidence of A-typicalitites. i. Reported that brains of autistic disorder children weighed a little more, the hippocampus (memory) and amygdala (fight/flight) were abnormally small.ii. Found that these individuals had serious A-typicalities in the cerebellum, which plays a role in motor sequential processes and higher processing.
