Most people believed it was the fault of the parent somehow or the child that brought deafness upon them. ii. First development of sign language.b. France: 18th century- L’Epee and sign instructioni. Creates the fist school for the deaf open to the general public. He uses the signs that he learned from two girls who showed him how they communicated.c. Oralism roots (Amman)d. Gallaudet (U.S. in 1812)i. Is convinced to go to Europe to learn about educating the deaf. ii. Is told that he will have to agree for every child placed under this curriculum will pay a fee.iii. He meets with a renowned educator of the deaf in England and asks to take one of his instructors back to D.C.iv. Comes back to the U.S. and establishes the American School of the Deaf.e. A.G. Bell – U.S. oral schools i. Develops the Bell system for writing language. Creates a system that can send ore than one message at a time over telegraph. II. Change in Incidence of Childhood Deafness: a. Prelingual & Postlinguali. Many students had Postlingual deafness, meaning they had at some point received spoken language input. ii. Later on more and more students had Prelingual deafness, meaning they lost their hearing before they began speaking or never developed hearing at all.These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
