AttitudesCurrent LectureCh 13 – Social Psychology: The Connected Mind-There’s a set of twins born to a biracial couple and one has really light skin and the other has dark skin. Would they be treated the same way when they grow up? The class doesn’t think so because of stereotypes and racial profiling.Social Rules-our position in society determines our behaviorHolocaust – Prison guards following orders-they only did what they did because they were “following orders”Stanford Prison Study (Zimbardo)-classic experiment where guy wondered what people would do simply on the basis of their role-divided kids into groups. One group was prison guards and one was prisoners. Prison guards were supposed to limit prisoners to one meal per day and allowed to discipline with clubs. Prisoners put behind bars. Prison guards given orders to mistreat prisoners, only took a few days to become really mean. Had to stop the study after 6 days instead of 14 because study went overboard. Findings say that because the people were given the role of guard and prisoner, these behaviors came out with very little instructions. Social role influences how people behave.
