after class for up to half an hour and by appointment CONTACT INFORMATION markspauld classes jccmi edu ATTENDANCE POLICY Attendance in this course is essential You are expected to be on time for the entire class To be marked present for the class session you must be in attendance for a minimum of 80 of the class time Thus it is possible that if you arrive late or leave early you will be marked absent Contact me in advance of absences if at all possible Keep in mind that poor attendance may also affect your Financial Aid COURSE SPECIFIC INFORMATION COURSE DESCRIPTION This is an intensive writing course designed to help students improve strengthen and refine writing skills Research methods are introduced An end of the semester portfolio of narrative and informative writings and an additional 16 hours of writing activities and workshops are required Prerequisites ENG 080 and ENG 090 You may meet this prerequisite based on your course placement ACT score or successful college College and Beyond Brief Edition New York Pearson Longman 2007 ADDITIONAL MATERIAL S Writing utensils Notebook 3 two pocket folders one for essays and class work one for GPAW one for final portfolio Flash drive Access to a computer with word processing capabilities and a printer COLLEGE SPECIFIC INFORMATION TUTORING See your instructor for recommendations on tutoring the Center for Student Success and or other help 1 ACADEMIC HONESTY from p 15 of the 2007 2008 JCC Catalog Academic honesty is expected of all students It is the ethical behavior that includes producing their own work and not representing others work as their own either by plagiarism by cheating or by helping others to do so Consequences Procedures Faculty members who suspect a student of academic dishonesty may penalize the student by taking appropriate action up to and including assigning a failing grade for the paper project report exam or the course itself Instructors should document instances of academic dishonesty in writing to the academic dean The Office of the Academic Deans will record and track students who have been reported as having cheated If the same student cheats in other courses the dean will enact sanctions appropriate to level of infraction The sanction will be selected in consultation with the involved faculty The Dean can administer consequences up to and including suspension RESPONSIBLE USE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY RESOURCES from p 6 of the 2007 2008 JCC Catalog Jackson Community College provides information technology resources such as computers Internet and campus intranet access to students staff and faculty and authorized guests who are performing educational cultural or other tasks that further the College mission Users of information technology resources must comply with all federal state other applicable laws and JCC s regulations and policies JCC s Responsible Use Policy includes guidelines on topics ranging from password and file protection to privacy and copyright issues The policy also defines a process for investigating possible violations All users are expected to be familiar and comply with the Responsible Use Policy It is in several publications including the Student Rights and Responsibilities handbook pp 14 27 available in the main campus Student Center and the main offices of the Hillsdale LeTarte Center and JCC VO TECH Adrian ENG 131 26 Fall 2007 Writing Experience 3 Credit Hours Syllabus Associate Degree Outcomes The course goals and objectives incorporate specific Associate Degree Outcomes ADOs established by the JCC Board of Trustees administration and faculty These goals are in concert with four year colleges universities and reflect input from the professional communities we serve ADOs guarantee students achieve goals necessary for graduation credit transferability and professional skills needed in many certification programs The ADOs and course objectives addressed in this class include the following ADO 1 Writing Clearly Concisely and Intelligibly Uses parts of the recursive process in writing which may include pre writing drafting revising editing and evaluating sources when used Shows some awareness of purpose style and tone are appropriate Demonstrates functional organizational structure examples and details generally support ideas and content Researches and writes for further understanding and additional knowledge Demonstrates documentation of sources when appropriate Attempts and practices correct grammar and mechanics meaning is clear ADO 9 Working in Small Groups Tasks and member roles are defined informally and most but not all members understand them Most members contribute Decision making procedures are established informally There is a general atmosphere of respect for team members but some members may not be heard as much as others Recognizes conflict and generally seeks teacher intervention Evaluation of group contributions occurs more informally and primarily by instructor My objectives for this class To teach you how to think read and write critically To teach you how to work and play well with others To show you new techniques and technology
