JCC @ LISD TECH- Room 131Course Description:“This is an intensive writing course designed to help students improve, strengthen and refine writing skills. Research methods are introduced. An end of the semester portfolio of narrative and informative writings and additional 16 hours of writing activities and workshops are required” (Prerequisites: Eng. 080 and Eng. 090)Textbooks: Writing: A Guide for College and Beyond Brief Edition by Lester Faigley The Brief Penguin Handbook by Lester Faigley Other Supplies: A flash drive, a 3 ring note book for handouts, 3 hole punch, 3 inexpensive colored folders, a small stapler, pen, pencilCourse Design: 1 Journal writing (4 ENTRIES FROM IN-CLASS WRITINGS ONLY)2. Writing workshops for 4 essays and portfolios3 Exercises in the basic skills of writing: thesis, the paragraph structure, and the conclusion4 The writing process will include choosing a topic, writing a rough draft, the editing and the revision process, and a completion of the final draft for typing for portfolios5 Using the contemporary essays and research reading material, students will begin todevelop their own style and voice6. 16 HOURS OF WORKSHOPS REQUIRED *(SEE DETAILS IN GRADING POLICY) Performance Objectives:"Eng 131 course goals and objectives incorporate specific Associate Degree Outcomes (ADOs) established by the JCC Board of Trustees, administration. and faculty. These goals are in concert with four-year colleges and universities and reflect input from the professionalcommunities we serve. ADOs guarantee students achieve goals necessary for graduation credit, transferability, and professional skills needed in many certification programs. The ADOs addressed in this course are:ADO 1: (Developing Level) Write Clearly, Concisely, and Intelligibly: Using the Process, Purpose and Audience, Organization and Development, Meaning and Understanding, Use MLA Documentation of Sources, and Clear Language/Mechanics and Grammar1. Uses parts of the writing process, which may include pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing, and evaluating sources when used.2. Show some awareness of purpose, style and tone. 3. Demonstrate functional organizational structure: examples and details which generally support ideas and content.4. Research and writes for further understanding and additional knowledge.5. Demonstrates documentation of sources when appropriate.6. Attempt and practice correct grammar and mechanics__ meaning is clear.ADO 9 (Developing Level)Work in Small Groups Participating, Making Collective Decisions, Supporting Team Members, Managing Conflict, and Evaluating 1. Define task and member roles informally, so most members will understand them and contribute.2. Establish decision-making procedures informally.3. Respect team members even members that may not be heard as much as others.4. Recognize conflict and generally seeks teacher intervention.5. Evaluate group member’s contributions informally__evaluated primarily by instructor.GPAW Information:"All students enrolled in a writing course at JCC must complete a total of sixteen hours of additional guided practice in composition, called Guided Practice Activities and Workshops (GPAW), outside of classroom time. Since GPAW work closely corresponds to classroom writing assignments, students are expected to complete assigned workshops at the times specified on the course calendar."**To Access GPAW Online Workshops-Go To Jackson Community College Web Page, Academic Departments, Language, Literature and Arts, and Information on GPAW. Participation is part of your final grade and reported on line (2 absences are allowed). Final grade will be lowered for absences, unreasonable tardiness 20 minutes or more, or leaving early ( .5 deduction for 3 absences,1.0 deduction for 4 absences, and 5 absences constitutes failure except in extreme hardship cases _speakwith me if you have a problem. Illness documentation is required).2. Reading quizzes may be planned or unannounced. Quizzes, essays, and in class writes cannot be made up__medical documentation is required.3. 16 Hours of GPAW (Guided Practice and Workshops) are required as assigned work inthe class schedule.4. All essays are to be 2 pages in length, typed and double spaced__less than 2 pages is a .5 grade deduction. Use MLA (Modern Language Association) for citations inside your essays and attach a work cited page__.5 is deducted for missing citations.4.
