Catalog Description: “An intensive writing course designed to help students improve, strengthen, and refine writing skills. Research methods are introduced. An end of the semester portfolio of narrative and informative writings, and sixteen hours of writing activities and workshops are required.” Educational Objectives of English 131: “ENG 131 course goals and objectives incorporate specific Associate Degree Outcomes (ADOs) established by the JCC Borad of Trustees, administration, and faculty. These goals are in concert with four-year colleges and universities and reflect input from the professional communities we serve. ADOs guarantee students achieve goals necessary for graduation credit, transferability, and professional skills needed in many certification programs. The ADOs addressed in this course are: ADO #1 (Developing) Writing clearly, concisely, and intelligibly - Process: uses parts of the recursive process in writing, which may include pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing, and evaluating sources when used. - Purpose and Audience: shows some awareness of purpose; tone and style are appropriate.2 - Organization and Development: demonstrates functional and organizational structure; examples and details generally support ideas and content. - Meaning/Understanding: researches and writes for further understanding and additional knowledge. - Uses of Sources and Documentation: demonstrates documentation of sources when appropriate. - Language: attempts and practices correct grammar and mechanics; meaning is clear ADO #9 (Developing) Working in small groups - Participating: tasks and member roles are defined informally, and most but not all members understand them. Most members contribute. - Making Collective Decisions: decision-making procedures are established informally. - Supporting Team Members: there is a general atmosphere of respect for team members, but some members may not be heard as much as others. - Managing Conflict: recognizes conflict and generally seeks teacher intervention - Evaluating: evaluation of group contributions occurs more informally and primarily by instructor. GPAW Information: “All students enrolled in a writing course at JCC must complete a total of sixteen hours of additional guided practice in composition, called Guided Practice Activities and Workshops (GPAW), outside of classroom time. Since GPAW work closely corresponds to classroom writing assignments, students are expected to complete assigned workshops at the times specified on the course calendar.” Classroom Behavior Policy: Students are expected to show the utmost respect to all others within the classroom by being attentive and listening while others are speaking. Treat others as you wish to be treated. Plan on arriving on time, participating in discussions, and working with others during class time to achieve course goals. Electronic Devices: All electronic devices (phones, MP3s, calculators, laptops, etc.) must be turned off and put away in purse, pocket, bookbag, etc. Electronic devices are not permitted on desks or tables. Laptops to be used only during in-class revision time. Attendance: Students are expected to attend all class meetings. If more than two meetings are missed, documentation of reasonable excuse will be needed in order to continue and pass the class. Arriving late or leaving early will count as ½ absence. Academic Honesty Policy: It is each student’s responsibility to read and follow the Academic Honesty Policy, as found in the JCC Student Handbook. Plagiarism and cheating are not tolerated.
