ENGLISH 131 WRITING EXPERIENCE Winter 2009 Instructor: Mrs. Kim McCollum Class Meeting Times: See attached sheet Office Hours:In the classroom 15 minutes before and after class or by appointment. Portfolio notebook 4. Spiral notebook for class 5. A flash/thumb drive to electronically store assignments 6. Internet Access 7. The Brief Penguin Handbook 3rd Edition by Lester Faigley Course Description: “This is an intensive writing course designed to help students improve, strengthen and refine writing skills. Research methods are introduced. An end of semester portfolio and an additional 16 hours of writing activities and workshops are required.”-JCC Catalog Course Design: The focus of this class is your writing. This class helps you prepare for college level writing by offering opportunities to practice your writing skills, develop a stronger process for creating papers, and learn to respond to other student's writing. You will be writing four essays this semester. I will provide directions for each paper as we begin the process of writing. You will have some class time to draft papers, to share papers, and to revise papers. You cannot plan to complete all of your work in class. You will be responsible for completing writing assignments and reading assignments outside of class. In class we will also talk about the readings, your writings, and whatever else seems appropriate. This gives me the opportunity to observe you as you work, to help you identify your strengths and weaknesses, and to offer suggestions and assistance. Perhaps you can't identify your own writing process; we will work on that too. Additionally, you will complete 16 hrs of GPAW workshops online. GPAW Information: All students enrolled in a writing class must complete a total of sixteen hours of additional guided practice in composition called Guided Practice Activities and Workshops. Since GPAW work closely corresponds to classroom writing assignments, students are expected to complete assigned workshops at the times specified on the course calendar.Performance Objectives/Associate Degree Outcomes: English 131 course goals and objectives incorporate specific Associate Degree Outcomes (ADOs) established by the JCC Board of Trustees, administration and faculty. These goals are in concert with four-year colleges and universities and reflect input from the professional communities we serve. ADO's guarantee students achieve goals necessary for graduation credit, transferability, and professional skills needed in many certification programs. The ADOs addressed in this course are: Writing clearly, concisely and intelligibly using the process, purpose and audience, organization and development, meaning and understanding, use MLA documentation of sources, and clear language/mechanics and grammar. (Developing level): ADO #1 Working in small groups participating, making collective decisions, supporting team members, managing conflict, and evaluating. (Developing level): ADO # 9 Assignments and Time Management: If you have any questions about an assignment, please email me or talk to me before the assignment is due, not afterward. Please don't wait until it is time to hand in an assignment to tell me you did not understand it or for some other reason could not complete it! Late work will not be accepted! Attendance and Participation: You are expected to attend each scheduled day of class. If you miss one class it will have a negative effect on your grade. If you miss two classes, your grade will be lowered one full grade. (A 4.0 becomes a 3.0) Two tardies will count the same as one absence. You are responsible for all missed work when you are absent. I advise you to find someone to exchange contact information with just in case. While in class, it is expected that you will actively participate in discussions and activities. You are responsible for completing all assignments, reflections, and projects as they are assigned; these are considered as part of your participation and attendance grade. If you are unable to attend class, I expect an email before class. Basic Format For All Assignments: All work must have your full name, course section and date at the top of the page. You should carefully check your spelling, punctuation, grammar and organization. Papers must be typed in 12 pt, Times New Roman font, double spaced with 1” margins on each side. Academic Honesty Policy: The JCC catalog states, "Academic honesty...is the ethical behavior that includes producing one's own work and not representing other's work as one's own, either by plagiarism, or by cheating, or by helping others to do so...Faculty members who suspect a student of academic dishonesty may penalize the student by assigning a failing grade for the assignment or the course itself. Instructors should document instances of academic dishonesty in writing to the Academic Dean." Tutorial Assistance: Is available for this course as well as most every course at JCC. If you would like to work with a tutor for this class, or for another class, please contact me or visit the Center for Student Success located in BW 125. The staff is there to help you succeed in your studies, so please do not hesitate to make use of this free resource.Students With Disabilities: Students who believe that they may need special accomodations in this class are encouraged to contact the office of Learning Support Services as soon as possible to ensure that such accomodations are implemented in a timely fashion. Classroom Behavior Policy: Students are expected to show respect in the classroom by being attentive and listening while others are speaking. Plan to arrive on time, participate in discussions, and work with others during class time. All electronic devices must be shut off. Associate Degree Outcomes and Course Objectives: The JCC Board of Trustees has developed a list of essential skills that all graduates should develop. The Board has said: "JCC's goal is to prepare students to live productive and meaningful lives. Implicit in this goal are efforts to prepare students to: (a) live and work in the 21st century,
