Because our course meets online you can expect to spend at least 8-10 hours per week working on homework, readings, discussions, writings, and other activities that make up the course. Timeliness is an important factor in the success of the course and so you will be expected to post, participate and respond on our course website each week, often several times a week. A great deal of our learning will take place through these discussions so it is expected that you will be an active participant each week.Course Description This is an intensive writing course designed to help students improve, strengthen and refine writing skills. Research methods are introduced. An end of the semester portfolio of narrative and informative writings and an additional 16 hours of writing activities and workshops are required. (Prerequisites: Eng 080 and Eng 090)Textbooks --Writing: A Guide for College and Beyond—Brief Edition by Lester Faigley--The Brief Penguin Handbook by Lester FaigleyOther Supplies--Powerpoint or Powerpoint viewerGrading ProceduresPortfolio: 40%Writing Assignments: 40% GPAW: 10%Participation: 10%Course Design and AssignmentsFinal Portfolio (40% of final grade)Your final portfolio should contain a minimum of 10 pages of polished writing that you have produced in this class. Think of this portfolio as an opportunity to display your bestwork and show your abilities to write within multiple genres with a specific purpose and audience in mind. The portfolio is extremely, extremely important to your overall grade and should be considered throughout the course of the semester as you work on revising your writing to completion. YOU WILL NOT PASS THIS CLASS IF YOU DO NOT TURN IN A PORTFOLIO!!!Writing Assignments (40% of final grade) Essays: You will work on four essays throughout the semester focused on informative and narrative writing. You will receive specific guidelines for each essay in class. Each paper should be turned in with all process work included (invention, rough drafts, peer reviews, etc.) The grading of these papers is based on both process and product. Each essay should be typed, double-spaced, written in 12-point font and contain appropriate MLA citations in addition to a works cited page when required. Writing Exercises: You will be writing regularly each week not only with your essays but with writing exercises and prompts to jumpstart ideas. These prompts vary from week to week and coordinate with the needs of our class. Participation (10% of final grade)In order to do well in this class, you need to be an active participant. That means completing work on time, but more importantly, contributing to ongoing discussions. Each week you will be expected to read and review other writer’s works either from the class or our textbook and respond in discussion forums. We will continually be replicating conversations as if we were a face-to-face class and so continual, active and thorough contributions to all required discussions is critical to not only your success as anindividual but the success of our class as a whole. You will be letting down the group by not participating and offering your feedback.GPAW (10% of final grade)All students enrolled in a writing course at JCC must complete a total of sixteen hours of additional guided practice in composition, called Guided Practice Activities and Workshops (GPAW), outside of classroom time. Since GPAW work closely corresponds to classroom writing assignments, students are expected to complete assigned workshops at the times specified on the course calendar. To access GPAW visit the Literature Language and Arts home at jccmi.edu or follow the direct link on our class wiki.Performance ObjectivesEng 131 course goals and objectives incorporate specific Associate Degree Outcomes (ADOs) established by the JCC Board of Trustees, administration, and faculty. These goals are in concert with four-year colleges and universities and reflect input from the professional communities we serve. ADOs guarantee students achieve goals necessary for graduation credit, transferability, and professional skills needed in many certification programs. The ADOs addressed in this course are:1. Writing Clearly, Concisely, and Intelligibly (Developing Level), ADO #1We will be achieving this through prewriting and revision exercises encompassed within the four essays. 2. Working in Small Groups (Developing Level), ADO #9Each essay will be workshopped within small groups, providing team work and collaborative skills. You will also work closely with other member of the class to analyze, discuss and interpret outside readings.Course PoliciesAcademic Honesty:Academic honesty is expected of all students. It is the ethical behavior that includes producing their own work and not representing others' work as their own, either by plagiarism, by cheating or by helping others to do so. Plagiarism: is the failure to give credit for the use of material from outside sources. Plagiarism includes but is not limited to: Using data, quotations, or paraphrases from other sources without adequate documentation, submitting other's work as your own, and exhibiting other behaviors generally considered unethical.Cheating: means obtaining answers/material from an outside source without authorization. Cheating includes, but is not limited to:- Plagiarizing in all forms- Using notes/books without authorization- Copying- Submitting others' work as your own or submitting your work for others- Altering graded work- Falsifying data- Exhibiting other behaviors generally considered unethicalCollaboration: While JCC encourages students to collaborate in study groups, work teams, and with lab partners, each student should take responsibility for accurately representing his/her own contribution.Consequences/Procedures: Faculty members who suspect a student of academic dishonesty may penalize the student by taking appropriate action up to and including assigning a failing grade for the paper, project, report, exam, or the
