GRADING SYSTEMJackson Community CollegeEnglish Department Course Syllabus Course Title: The Writing ExperienceCourse Number: ENG 131 Credits: 3 Mondays and Wednesdays: 6:00 to 7:56 p.m. (12 Week Format)Room 205 BWInstructor: Dr. Gedy [email protected] DESCRIPTION College Writing is the branch of English that examines the writing processes required in the formalsetting in college and in professional arenas. You will be spending an intense semester studying your roleas one who communicates in writing. Our communications serve a major role in our place ofemployment, in characterizing our external images, as well as in identifying our internal cultures. This isyour class and you are critical to its success. Please prepare for class since the format will be basicallydiscussion/lecture then activity. Be sure that you have read the required information and that you havecompleted the required assignments for the class period.TextAxelrod, Rise B. and Charles R. Cooper, eds. The St. Martin’s Guide to Writing. 7th Edition. New York: St. Martin’s, 2004.EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES 1. To provide writing experiences which encourage student to express themselves. Theseexperiences will include not only cognitive activities, but also encourage affective ones.2. To enable students to discover, recognize, and improve their abilities in writing, through exposureto and involvement in varied forms of writing, which may include personal narratives, letters,journals, reports, position statements, and interviews.3. To enable students to understand and demonstrate that writing is a process which involves pre-writing techniques, drafting, revising, and editing.14. To enable students to understand the relations between language choices and the intended reader.5. To provide students with writing “survival skills” suitable to academic and occupationalcommunities.6. To introduce students to methods of information gathering and research, and to foster the personaluse of these methods and resources for further academic study, occupational activities, and life-long learning.7. To enable student to work productively with others, as members of peer reading/writing groups,learning collaborative strategies in order to successfully complete a project.8. To enable students to learn work processing skills in drafting, editing, and polishing writingpapers.STUDENT PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS FOR SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF ENGLISH 1311. To write and to produce a variety of writings, both graded and non-graded2. To be aware that writing is an activity important to an active intellectual life involving discovery, comprehension, and interpretation3. To demonstrate effective use of the writing process4. To learn to recognize form in writing, appropriate to purpose and to audience5. To participate in responding to and evaluating writing produced by themselves and others6. To produce a writing which uses research methodology7. To begin to recognize and to understand various patterns of usage and to appreciate how these change and evolve8. To produce at least one paper which demonstrates work processing skillsAttendance - Participation in class discussion and in class activities is an important part of thelearning process. Regular attendance is expected. If, due to unforeseen circumstances, a classwill be missed, please notify the instructor prior to class. Assignments due on the absence dateare to be handed in by the beginning of the next class session. If you miss this class threeconsecutive sessions, Dr. Helmer will assume you have withdrawn and she will begin theprocesses for instructor-initiated drop.Assignments - It is the responsibility of the student to read the appropriate section of the textprior to class and complete assignments. All assignments are due on the assigned date. If anassignment is missed, please contact the instructor to make arrangements for make-up.Instructions for specific assignments will be given throughout the semester. If you are having any problems with completing assignments, call Dr. Helmer and discuss these2with her.Classroom Etiquette Part of learning how to be an effective professional is learning how to be an active listener. Withthat in mind, it is essential that students demonstrate courteous class etiquette by following theserules: 1. Actively listen to the person who has the speaking floor (that includes making eyecontact, letting him/her know that you are listening). 2. If you would like to contribute to a discussion, wait until there is an appropriate breakand share your contribution with the entire class rather than whispering and talking toyour neighbor. 3. Active listening means that you are engaged in the subject, not reading or writing onanother subject. 4. Turn all cell phones and pagers to vibrate or off during class time. Emergency calls onlyshould be taken outside the classroom. 5. Actively participate in all group assignments. The Electronic ClassroomRoom 205 has unique electronic equipment that is representative of the future directions of theclassroom. You will be responsible for the use of an assigned laptop computer. You will also beresponsible for utilizing the equipment with the utmost care and courtesy.Let's work together as a team to make this a good learning experience for everyone in theroom. METHOD OF STUDENT EVALUATION The student will be evaluated on quality of participation in discussions and activities, anddemonstration of understanding of material.
