Writing Experience 131.34Fall 2008Saturday 9:00AM-12:30PMAtkinson Room 116Instructor: Debra M. Potter MA, LLPCEmail: [email protected] hours: by appointment only; I am also available after each class session. I am not usually available before class sessions because I am driving from work in Lansing to get here by 6:00PM.**Please tune into your local stations when we are receiving wintry weather to determine if class has been canceled. If I ever cancel a class you will receive a telephone call from the Language and Literature Department informing you; the department will also post a notice on the door of the classroom.**Course Description:“This is an intensive writing course designed to help students improve, strengthen and refine writing skills. Research methods are introduced. An end of the semester portfolio of narrative and informative writings and an additional 16 hours of writing activities and workshops are required.” PrerequisitePrerequisites: ENG 080 and ENG 090Textbooks:Writing: A Guide for College and Beyond-Brief Edition by Lester FaigleyThe Brief Penguin Handbook, 3rd edition by Lester FaigleyPracticing Peer Review and Researching Online (What Every Student Should Know Series)Other helpful supplies include, but are not required, are: flash drives, folders for drafts and their completed portfolios, notebook for journaling and taking classroom notes.Course Design:The focus of this course is your writing. My plan is to create a learning environment where you feel comfortable and safe to express yourself and your ideas. You will have many opportunities in class to practice writing and work collaboratively in groups. Performance Objectives:ENG 131 course goals and objectives incorporate specific Associate Degree Outcomes (ADOs) established by the JCC Board of Trustees, administration, and faculty. These goals are in concert with four-year colleges and universities and reflect input from the professional communities we serve. ADOs guarantee students achieve goals necessary 1for graduation credit, transferability, and professional skills needed in many certification programs. The ADOs addressed in this course are:Writing Clearly, Concisely, and Intelligibly (Developing Level), ADO #1Working in Small Groups (Developing Level), ADO #9Guided Practice Activities and Workshops (GPAW) information:“All students enrolled in a writing course at Jackson Community College (JCC) must complete a total of sixteen hours of additional guided practice in composition, called Guided Practice Activities and Workshops (GPAW), outside of classroom time. Since GPAW work closely corresponds to classroom writing assignments, students are expectedto complete assigned workshops at the times specified on the course calendar.”COURSE POLICIES:Incomplete grade:The incomplete grade is in place for students who may experience extenuating circumstances which prevent them from completing the course by the end of a semester. Incomplete grades will only be given to students who have demonstrated a passing grade up to the point that they request the incomplete. The incomplete must then be completed by the following full-length semester. If you find yourself in this position and want to request an incomplete let me know and we will schedule a time to go over the necessary documents to put this in place.Academic Honesty Policy:JCC has an academic policy in place that prohibits dishonesty in the presentation of your work. Plagiarism in all forms is not tolerated and may result in disciplinary action from JCC; you may not copy the works of others and represent it as your own. This can take the form of either directly copying or paraphrasing work that belongs to another individual. We will discuss this in greater detail in class.Late Work:No portfolios will be accepted late; essays must have been edited by me and reworked by you and turned in for a final grade by me before they will be accepted in you portfolio.Papers that have not received a final grade from me will not be accepted into your portfolio; if you do not have the required number of essays in your portfolio you will lose points. Essays turned in late throughout the semester will be subject to reduced points; if you can not make it to class to turn in an essay that is due that class period you may e-mail it to me by the beginning of the class period that it is due. All work turned in late will receive a reduced gradePassing Grade:You must receive a 2.0 (C) or higher for this course to count toward graduation; other colleges only transfer in courses with passing grades. If you stop coming to class and do not drop the course you will receive an E in the class at the end of the semester.2Use of computers: Playing games, internet searches, shopping online, e-mails, etc. are prohibited during class. Checking e-mail or searching the internet is acceptable before orafter class or at break. I will be monitoring computer usage during class, particularlywhen I am lecturing, if I see students trying to abuse this I will deduct points for participation. You will not be considered to be participating during class if you are on the internet or e-mailing friends. Cell Phones: Please do not use your cell phones during class period; also no text messaging. Please be considerate of your instructor and fellow students.- Please put your cell phones on silent or vibrate during class. - If you have to take a call please leave the classroom quietly before answering your cell phone.Attendance: Attendance is crucial and part of your participation grade; anything above 2 missed class periods will result in a loss of points for participation-I will be taking attendance. If you know you are going to miss a class when an assignment is due either turn that assignment in early or e-mail it to me by the beginning of the class period that it is due. Please use good judgment when you are ill. If you ever need to leave a telephone message for me please call JCC at 517-787-0800 and ask to speak to the Language and Literature Department; the secretary will take your message. The quickest way to communicate with me is by e-mail-I check my e-mail daily.STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES:- It is your responsibility to make sure you have your user id and password so that you may access the GPAWs. If you do not have this information you need to obtain it before the second week of class. If you are having trouble accessing your account please contact
