Get in the habit of checking the wiki regularly (starting today!) as it will be constantly updated with new information. This is my way to communicate with you outside of class and you should check here first if you ever have any questions. Course Description This is an intensive writing course designed to help students improve, strengthen and refine writing skills. Research methods are introduced. An end of the semester portfolio of narrative and informative writings and an additional 16 hours of writing activities and workshops are required. (Prerequisites: Eng 080 and Eng 090)Textbooks --Writing: A Guide for College and Beyond—Brief Edition by Lester Faigley--The Brief Penguin Handbook by Lester FaigleyOther Supplies--A zip drive—We will be doing a lot of work in class so you need something to save your work to other than your email.--Several two-pocket folders—All essays and portfolios will be placed in a two pocket folder to turn in.Course Design and AssignmentsEssays: Four essays to include process and polished pieces (worth 50 pts each, 25 pts forprocess and 25 pts for product, 20% of final grade)You will work on four essays throughout the semester to include a remembered event or experience essay, a place portrait essay, a persuasive essay, and a self evaluation/technology reflection essay. You will receive specific guidelines for eachessay in class and they will also be posted on our class wiki. Each paper should be turnedin with all process procedures included (invention, rough drafts, peer reviews, etc.) and should be placed in a two pocket folder with process work on one side and your polished piece on the other side. The grading of these papers is based on process and product and therefore, each component is worth a possible 25 points (for example, you could earn a total of 25 points on your polished draft but lose points on the process component if you do not hand in a peer review). Each essay should be typed, double-spaced, written in 12-point font and contain appropriate MLA citations in addition to a works cited page when required.Wiki Research Project (worth 100 pts total, 50 pts for process and group development and 50 pts for product, 10% of final grade). If you have no idea what I mean when I say a Wiki Research Project don’t worry!! You are not alone!! We will go over EVERYTHING in class when the time comes. The Wiki Research Project is a group project as well as an individual endeavor. You will work in groups to decide a general topic and each individual group member will then explore a subtopic of their groups chosen topic. You are free to explore any area that interests you for this project, but all group members must agree upon the topics. Additionally, your group will create a wiki as part of the assignment which will house all of your individual research to create a collective research project. We will go over all of this in class and you will have plenty of in-class time to work on developing your wikis as a group. There is also an oral presentation component to this assignment where each group will present their final wiki to the class. In addition to the group presentation of your research, you will also hand in a research essay. I will provide appropriate details when the time comes. As with your other essays, the essay you produce for your portfolio should be typed, double spaced, written in 12-point font and constructed with the MLA format.Final Portfolio (400 pts, 40% of final grade)Your final portfolio should contain a minimum of 10 pages of polished writing that you have produced in this class. Think of this portfolio as an opportunity to display your bestwork and show your abilities to write within multiple genres with a specific purpose and audience in mind. By the end of the semester you should have plenty of content to choose from through the four essay assignments and your Wiki Research Project. The portfolio is extremely, extremely important to your overall grade and should be considered throughout the course of the semester as you work on revising your writing to completion. YOU WILL NOT PASS THIS CLASS IF YOU DO NOT TURN IN A PORTFOLIO!!!Blog Journal (100 pts, 10% of final grade)You will be keeping a public journal this semester that will be presented as a blog (If you’ve never heard of a blog, don’t worry! We will go over how to create a blog in class and learn all about posting to blogs). Often times, I will assign specific content to writeon your blogs as homework, other weeks you will write about anything you wish. You will be required to complete at least two blog posts per week and I will check and respond to your blogs every Sunday. You must have your two posts for the week up on your blog every Sunday by noon in order to receive credit for the week. THERE ARE NO MAKE-UPS FOR THE BLOGS—IF YOU DON’T HAVE YOURS POSTED BY SUNDAY AT NOON YOU WON’T EARN FULL CREDIT. At times, you may also be asked to respond to your peer’s blogs. GPAW (100 pts, 10% of final grade)16 hours of online workshops (more details below)Participation (100 pts, 10% of final grade)Full and active participation is crucial to success in this course.
