The course is designed to help students become comfortable and confident with their writing while working to improve and refine skills.”Associate Degree OutcomesEnglish 131 course goals and objectives incorporate specific Associate Degree Outcomes (ADOs) established by the JCC Board of Trustees, administration and faculty. These goals are in concert with four-year colleges and universities and reflect input from the professional communities we serve. ADOs guarantee students achieve goals necessary for graduation credit, transferability, and professional skills needed in many certification programs. The ADOs addressed in this course are at a developing level, and include: Writing Clearly, Concisely, and Intelligibly – Utilizing the Writing Process, showing awareness of purpose and audience, demonstrating functional organization and development, finding meaning in andunderstanding writing, using and documenting appropriate research, and practicing correct grammar and mechanics Working in Small Groups – Participating in group discussions, making collective decisions, supporting and encouraging team members, learning how to give constructive comments, managing conflict that may arise, andevaluating group comments and contributionsGradingYour final grade will be determined by the total number of points achieved on the following: Papers and Process Work – 30% Writer’s Journal – 10% Class Attendance and Participation – 15% Guided Practice and Workshops (GPAW) – 15% Portfolio - 30%Grading Scale Essays (4 @ 75 pts each) 300 points Journals (4 @ 25 pts each) 100 points Attendance/Participation (5 pts a day) 150 points GPAW (10 pts per hour) 150 points Portfolio 300 pointsJCC reports grades on a four-point scale, so the percentage of points you obtain in this class will break down to the following points on a four-point scale:100.90 4.089-85 3.584-80 3.079-75 2.574-70 2.069-65 1.564-60 1.059-55 0.554-Below 0.0After each essay is returned, you will be able to view your current grade so as to monitor your progress in class.Papers and Process WorkYou will be required to complete four 3-6 page essays throughout this course, which will include a Personal Narrative, a Character or Place Portrait, a Profile of a Place or Event, and a Position Paper. These papers must be double-spaced, 12pt Arial or Times New Roman font, with 1-inch margins to meet portfolio specifications. Because of the importance of learning the writing process in this course, all papers will be submitted in afolder with full process including discovery, drafting, peer responses, revisions, and apolished draft. Your grade for each of these four papers will be based on all of the work you did in the process of writing it as well as the finished product, and the maximum score for each will be 75 points. Writer’s JournalThe purpose of the Writer’s Journal is to aid you in the writing process throughout the course. Your Writer’s Journal will consist of assigned entries, which might include process work for assigned papers, responses to readings, responses to peer writing, exercises from the text or online, brainstorming, personal reflections related to your writing and on yourself as a writer, and more. Your Writer’s Journal will be collected and reviewed with each of the four papers you submit, with a maximum score of 25 points each submission. Every journal entry must be a minimum of one full page typed, double-spaced. Class Attendance and ParticipationDue to the collaborative nature of the course, class attendance and participation is necessary. You can receive up to 5 points a day for attendance and participation. I do realize that circumstances may arise that will not enable you to attend class, though. Because of this, I will not deduct points for your first two absences. But, any absence thereafter will result in the loss of 5 points, so use your absences wisely. Also, any tardiness or leaving of class early will result in at least a one point deduction for the day. Class participation will require you to do all of the required reading and writing activities.Participation means contributing to class discussions and working collaboratively with classmates.**If you miss three or more consecutive sessions without contacting me, you will automatically be dropped from the course. If you miss any more than six non-consecutive sessions, you will also be automatically dropped from this course.Guided Practice and Workshops (GPAW)The Guided Practice and Workshops component has been designed to create 16 Hours of composition practice and reflective activities outside of classroom hours. The purpose of this requirement is to allow students to develop their writing even further, and to allow learning on an individual level that cannot be provided within the constraints of a single semester composition course. Through face-to-face and online workshops composition students will be given supplemental help on and guided practice for completing current essay assignements and the end-of-the-semester portfolio.PortfolioYour portfolio will take the place of a final exam, and will be 10-12 pages of your best work that has been produced and graded in this class. The goal of the portfolio is to see that you can take the suggestions and comments you received on your graded essays, and use them to improve your writings and complete more polished drafts. *You will not receive your portfolio back, as the
