Course DescriptionJCC Catalogue: This is an intensive writing course designed to help students improve, strengthen and refine writing skills. Research methods are introduced. An end of the semester portfolio of narrative and informative writings and an additional 16 hours of writing activities and workshops are required. The primary purpose of this class is to strengthen your writing process and prepare you for college writing. Writing well requires you to think critically and to convey your thoughts effectively to your reader. Good writing is more than just good grammar and punctuation, but these skills are essential and we will work on them as needed. One of the primary ways in which we will grow as writers is through peer editing and review of our work. This process can be intimidating at first, but can also be exciting and rewarding. Associate Degree OutcomesEng 131 course goals and objectives incorporate specific Associate Degree Outcomes (ADOs) established by the JCC Board of Trustees, administration, and faculty. These goals are in concertwith four-year colleges and universities and reflect input from the professional communities we serve. ADOs guarantee students achieve goals necessary for graduation credit, transferability, and professional skills needed in many certification programs. The ADOs addressed in this course are:ADO 1: Writing Clearly, Concisely and Intelligibly (Developing Level)- Process- Purpose and Audience- Organization and DevelopmentEng. 131.26 SyllabusPage 3- Meaning/Understanding- Use of Sources & Documentation- LanguageADO 9: Working in Small Groups (Developing Level)- Participating- Making Collaborative Decisions- Supporting Team Members- Managing Conflict- EvaluatingAs you can see, this course is not just about writing, it is also about working in small groups. In order to meet this objective for the course, it is essential to be present and prepared.Grading ProceduresYour grade in English 131 will be determined by totaling these grades:30% Essays & Writing Process30% Portfolio15% GPAW Notebook10% Final Project5% Quizzes and In-Class Assignments10% Class Participation & AttendanceGrading will be done on the following scale:95-100%: 4.0 66-71%: 1.589-94%: 3.5 60-65%: 1.084-88%: 3.0 55-59%: 0.578-83%: 2.5 54% and below: 0.072-77%: 2.0Incompletes: In accordance with JCC’s policy, incompletes are only offered to students who have demonstrated good standing in a course, have completed 50% or more of the course work, and have a strong reason for requiring an incomplete.
