Potter MA, LLPCEmail: [email protected] Office hours: by appointment only; I am also available before and after each class session.Course Description:“This is an intensive writing course designed to help students improve, strengthen and refine writing skills. Research methods are introduced. An end of the semester portfolio of narrative and informative writings and an additional 16 hours of writing activities and workshops are required. (Prerequisites: Eng 080 and Eng 090)Textbooks:Writing: A Guide for College and Beyond-Brief Edition by Lester FaigleyThe Brief Penguin Handbook, 2nd edition by Lester FaigleyPracticing Peer Review and Researching Online (What Every Student Should Know Series”)Other helpful supplies include, but are not required are: flash drives, folders for drafts andfor their completed portfolios, etc.Course Design:Performance Objectives: “Eng 131 course goals and objectives incorporate specific Associate Degree Outcomes (ADOs) established by the JCC Board of Trustees, administration, and faculty. These goals are in concert with four-year colleges and universities and reflect input from the professional communities we serve. ADOs guarantee students achieve goals necessary for graduation credit, transferability, and professional skills needed in many certification programs. The ADOs addressed in this course are: Writing Clearly, Concisely, and Intelligibly (Developing Level), ADO #1 Working in Small Groups (Developing Level), ADO#9GPAW Information:“All students enrolled in a writing course at JCC must complete a total of sixteen hours of additional guided practice in composition, called Guided Practice Activities and Workshops (GPAW), outside of classroom time. Since GPAW work closely corresponds to classroom writing assignments, students are expected to complete assigned workshops at the times specified on the coursecalendar.”1Grading Procedures:Essays: Four essays will be assigned and are worth 5 points each for a total of 20 points (see calendar for due dates). Essays must be 2-3 pages in length, typed, double-spaced using 12 font and one inch margins. Essays must have cover page stating title, audience, and purpose along with your name and course number and section (131.23). Although I will be looking at punctuation, grammar, and sentence structure, these will not be the focus of your grade. I will primarily be looking at your introduction, your transition fromyour introduction to the main content of your paper, and your conclusion. I will also be looking at whether or not your essay speaks to the audience you have targeted and met the purpose you have proposed. We will go over this in further detail in class.Writer’s Journal: (20 points) I will assign four dates for your journal to be turned in at which time you will be awarded five points each time for a total of 20 points. You will need to make one entry per week containing a minimum of one page in length (see calendar for due dates). This journal will contain your thoughts, experiences and improvements as a writer. You may use this journal to develop ideas and topics we have discussed in class; you may not use this journal to discuss your everyday activities such as you would in a diary. Your grade will be based on successful completion of each journal entry according to guidelines as stated above.Portfolio: (30 points total) This portfolio will contain a copy of each one of your four essays after they have been graded by me and a final revision done by you. This portfoliowill be due at the end of the semester (see calendar for exact date) and may be also submitted to the English Department-further information will come at a later date.Groupwork: (16 points) Peer review will be conducted for every essay that you write; you will be awarded 4 points for each session that you participate in. This will be an in class workshop where you will divide into groups and read and assess each others essays;you must bring enough copies to each session for each member in your group. I will provide you with an outline as a guide before the first peer review. You can also lose points in peer review for being disrespectful to fellow students; I expect that each of you will treat others as you wish to be treated. I will go over guidelines in further detail in class.GPAW: (14 points) GPAW due dates are listed in the calendar section; there are seven sections in all, each worth 2 points on your grade. To earn the 2 points per GPAW you must print off the report at the end of each GPAW and turn it in to me by the beginning ofthe class period that it is due.Extra Credit: (5 points) To earn these extra credit points you must attend Project Success Day on 10/2/07. You must turn in a copy of your certificate of completion that will be handed out that day to each student in attendance in order to receive your extra credit points. It is your responsibility to obtain verification of attendance.2Grading Scale:90-100 4.0 (A)85-89 3.5 (B+)80-84 3.0 (B)75-79 2.5 (C+)70-74 2.0 (C)65-69 1.5 (D+)60-64 1.0 (D)Below 59 0.0COURSE POLICIES: Incomplete grade: The incomplete grade is in place for students who may experience extenuating circumstances which prevent them from completing the course by the end of a semester. Incomplete grades will only be given to students who have demonstrated a passing grade up to the point that they request the incomplete. The incomplete must then be completed by the following full-length semester. Academic Honesty Policy:Jackson Community College (JCC) has an academic policy in place that prohibits dishonesty in the presentation of your work. Plagiarism in all forms is not tolerated and may result in disciplinary action from JCC; you may not copy the works of others and represent it as your own. This can take the form of either directly copying or paraphrasing work that belongs to another individual. We will discuss this in greater detail in class.Late Work:Papers turned in late will result in a loss of points; if you turn in a paper late do not expect to receive full points. In class work can not be made up; I strongly suggest that you exchange e-mails or phone numbers with other reliable students in the class so that you may catch up on information that you missed while absent. Passing GradeYou must receive a 2.0 (C) or higher
