Boston & New York: Bedford/St. Martin’s, 2004.Associate Degree Outcomes for Eng 131The Board of Trustees has determined that all JCC graduates should develop or enhance certain essential skills while enrolled in the college. Several of these Associate Degree Outcomes are addressed in this class, including: ADO la, the ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and intelligibly using writing skills;ADO 2, the ability to comprehend and use information including written and oral forms; ADO 5, the ability to work productively with others; and ADO 7, facility in the use of computers and other technologies appropriate to the program of study.English 131 writing experience objectives for classOverall these credits help students transfer to other educational institutions or provide for employment or occupational advancement, and also allows students to:produce a variety of non-graded and graded writing;promote intellectual awareness though discovery, comprehension, and interpretation in writing; relate the writing process to a specific audience and purpose;help evaluate and respond to their writings and others;begin to use research methodology; use word processing skills to write essays; and promotes understanding through technology, science, and the artsCOURSE DESCRIPTION 3 CREDITS1 Journal writing (5 ENTRIES FROM IN-CLASS WRITINGS ONLY)2. Writing workshops for 5 essays and portfolios3 Exercises in the basic skills of writing: thesis, the paragraph structure, and the conclusion4 The writing process will include choosing a topic, writing a rough draft, the editing and the revision process, and a completion of the final draft for typing for portfolios5 Using the contemporary essays and research reading material, students will begin to develop their own styleand voice6. 16 HOURS OF WORKSHOPS REQUIRED *(SEE DETAILS IN GRADING POLICY)To Access GPAW Online Workshops-Go To Jackson Community College Web Page, academic departments, Language, Literature and Arts, and Information on GPAW. IMPORTANT-You must pre-schedule your workshop attendance. 16 hour information English Workshop Information:The goals associated with the writing extensions are designed to meet student writer needs at their competency levels, to provide additional help for students whose majors are outsideof the humanities, to offer reinforcement of concepts related to genre, writing theory, and composition strategies offered in the composition classroom, to offer more time with a variety of writing faculty, and to assist students with focused work on problem areas.GPAW 16 hour completion: All JCC composition students are required to complete 16 hours of Guided Practice and Workshops (GPAW), focused on composition work outside of the writing classroom. These hours may be achieved in a number of ways including student/teacher conferences, instructor initiated writing projects, individual tutoring, and drop-in writing assistance through the Center for Student Success, formal workshops provided by JCC faculty, reflective writing opportunities, online workshops, and online tutoring.English related Project Success Day workshops Oct. 3rd. and Suggested Online Workshops for ENG 131 GPAW 1. Invention and Discovery (3 hours) 2. Finding Meaning (3 hours)3. Rhetorical Situation (2 hours)4. Quote, Summary, Paraphrase (2 hours)5.. Revision or Editing Bugaboos (3 hours)6. Portfolio Preparation (2 hours)Class Particpation and Grading Policy1.(Particiapation is part of your final grade and reported on line (2 absences are allowed). Final grade will be lowered for absences, unreasonable tardiness, or leaving early.2. Reading quizzes may be planned or unannounced. Quizzes, essays, and in class writes cannot be made up. (Medical documentation is required).3. All essays are to be 2 pages in length, typed and double speaced. (Less than 2 pages is a .5 grade deduction. Use MLA IMPORTANT REQUIREMENTS citations inside your essays and attach a work cited page. (.5 is deducted for missing citations.)4. PORTFOLIO IS REQUIRED and must be turned on the due date(Late portfolios require medical documentation). STUDENT DO NOT PASS WITHOUT A PORTFOLIO.5. Essay revisions (2.0) or lower will raise your grade point (.5) only when your essay is turned in on time with a rough draft for each essay. 6. All revision will improve your final portfolio grade.7. IMPORTANT…ALL ESSAYS MUST BE REVIEWED BY ME FIRST BEFORE THEY CAN BE PLACED INTO YOUR PORTFOLIO.8. LATE PAPERS WILL BE GRADED 1 FULL GRADE POINT LOWER UNLESS STUDENT HAS DOCTOR'S EXCUSE OR DEATH NOTICE. (EX. 3.0 to 2.0)9..
