Writing ExperienceEnglish 131.61 (3 CR)T/R 11:00-12:56Atkinson 220September 11-December 6Instructor: Kim [email protected] Description: This is an intensive writing course designed to help students improve, strengthen and refine writing skills. Research methods are introduced. An end of the semester portfolio of narrative and informative writings and an additional 16 hours of writing activities and workshops are required.Class Goals and ADOsIn this class we will go through the steps of the writing process and try to find the best techniques to help in your own personal writing process. The assignments for this class incorporate specific Associate Degree Outcomes (ADOs) established by the JCC Board of Trustees, administration, and faculty. These goals are in concert with four-year colleges and universities and reflect input from the professional communities we serve. ADOs guarantee students achieve goals necessary for graduation credit, transferability, and professional skills needed in many certification programs.ADO 1. You will develop and become proficient in writing. You will be able to write clearly, concisely, and intelligibly. You will be learning the recursive nature of the writing process and evaluating sources. You will be able to effectively engage your audience and establish credibility. You will be able to organize, develop, and support central ideas with abundant examples and facts. You will understand how to mix prior knowledge with new information. You will be able to use research and sources effectively and be able to document sources correctly. You will improve your skills on grammar, mechanics, and word choice, writing sentences that show variety and complexity.ADO 9. You will gain a greater understanding of working in groups, becoming proficientin participating, making collective decisions, supporting group members, managing conflict, and evaluating your contributions and role in a group.Materials:*Text-Writing: A Guide for College and Beyond by Lester Faigley*A USB thumbdrive/flashdrive is HIGHLY recommended*Three simple two-pocket folders. Label as “Process Folder,” “GPAW Activities,” and “Portfolio.”*Paper and Writing Utensils needed daily.*Be sure to save all work in progress!Computers:Computer problems are not an excuse for incomplete or late work. Students are responsible for completing homework in a timely fashion. If you experience technical problems at home, you need to come to the college to complete your work in one of JCC’s labs, or find another computer.If you are working on a home computer system that is not compatible with the Windows 2000 or later Windows systems, you should save all of your work as a Rich Text File; with some exceptions, this allows the JCC computers to read your files. If you have problems transferring work, from home to school, contact the JCC Solution Center and talk to one of our technicians. You can contact them at (517) 796-8639, or through the JCC website. www.jccmi.eduLogin to JCC accounts: First seven letters of last name, first seven letter of first name, middle initial followed by @stu.jccmi.edu. Use no spaces; for example, Jennifer Ann Smith would log in as: [email protected] Your password in the first letter of your first and last name followed by your Day of birth, the last two numbers of your year of birth, and the last 4 numbers of your student I.D. For example, Jennifer Smith born on 5/04/1989 with a Student I.D. of 0125643 would be: js04895643. It is recommended that your change your password after your first log in.Major Assignments:- Portfolio-50% of your grade: A collection of your final, revised writings submitted to show the variety and quality of your best work, demonstrating your strengths and abilities as a writer. In the context of our class, “finished” means that it has been read by me and at least two other members of this class and revised as many times as necessary. Finished writing is as complete, polished, and as correct as you are able to make it and demonstrates a strong sense of purpose and audience. Your Portfolio should include a variety of forms and should consist of 10-12 full pages. (typed, 12 pt. Times New Roman Font and double spaced.- GPAW hours-15% of your grade: All students enrolled in a writing course at JCC must complete a total of sixteen hours of additional guided proactive in composition, called Guided Practice Activities and Workshops. (GPAW) Since GPAW work closely corresponds to classroom writing assignments, students are expected to complete assigned workshops at the times specified on the course calendar.- Writing Process-25% of your grade: The four papers will be submitted in a folderwith full process including discovery, drafting, peer responses, revisions, and a polished revised draft that is ready for a designated audience. The folder will alsocontain a short, reflective essay on your process.- Quizzes-5% of your grade: Various short quizzes will be given over your daily reading assignments.- Grading Scale:95-100%=4.089-94%=3.584-88%=3.078-83%=2.572-77%=2.066-71%=1.560-65%=1.055-59%=0.5Academic HonestyHonesty is expected of all students. It is the ethical behavior that includes producing your own work and not representing other’s work as your own, either by plagiarism, by cheating, or by helping others to do so. (See this policy in the Student Handbook.) This honesty translates into doing your own work, correctly citing your sources and not falselyrepresenting someone else’s work as your own. There is a zero-tolerance policy for plagiarism. AttendanceRegular class attendance is required and is essential to completing this course. More than three absences from class will result in your grade being lowered for each additional absence. If you cannot attend class, contact me before the class to get your assignments. You will still be responsible for all work due.Late WorkLate work will not be accepted and missing assignments will be graded a zero
