Syllabus for English 131 Writing Experience 131.73 Fall Semester 2009 Adjunct Professor Diane E. Turner E-Mail: [email protected] About Office Hours: I am on campus Monday-Wednesday between 11:00 and 1:00 and Thursday evenings. The best way to reach me is by e-mail. I will be more than happy to meet with you outside of class, but you MUST make an appointment. Course Information 3 Credits Days: Monday & Wednesday 11-12:56 JCC@LISD TECH Course Description: “This is an intensive writing course designed to help students improve, strengthen and refine writing skills. Research methods are introduced. An end of the semester portfolio of narrative and informative writings and additional 16 hours of writing activities and workshops are required” (Prerequisites: Eng. 080 and Eng. 090) Textbook: Writing: A Guide for College and Beyond Brief Edition by Lester Faigley 2nd. Edition Other Supplies: A flash drive, a 3 ring note book for handouts, 3 hole punch, 3 inexpensive colored folders, a small stapler, pen, pencil Course Design: Using the contemporary text essays and instructor reading materials, students will begin to develop their own style and voice. Each student will learn the basic skills of writing: the (implied or stated) thesis, the paragraph structure, and the conclusion. Workshops for the writing process will include choosing a topic, writing a rough draft, the editing and the revision process, and a completion of the final draft for typing for portfolios. Four essays are required including a Personal Experience, Character Profile, Informative, Argument Position, and a Group Essay on a Film. Also, four journal entries will be related to the text essays. Performance Objectives: "Eng 131 course goals and objectives incorporate specific Associate Degree Outcomes (ADOs) established by the JCC Board of Trustees, administration, .and faculty. These goals are in concert with four-year colleges and universities and reflect input from the professional communities we serve. ADOs guarantee students achieve goals necessary for graduation credit, transferability, and professional skills needed in many certification programs. The ADOs addressed in this course are:ADO 1: (Developing Level) Write Clearly, Concisely, and Intelligibly: Using the Process, Purpose and Audience, Organization and Development, Meaning and Understanding, Use MLA Documentation of Sources, and Clear Language/Mechanics and Grammar 1. Uses parts of the writing process, which may include pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing, and evaluating sources when used. 2. Show some awareness of purpose, style and tone. 3. Demonstrate functional organizational structure: examples and details which generally support ideas and content. 4. Research and writes for further understanding and additional knowledge. 5. Demonstrates documentation of sources when appropriate. 6. Attempt and practice correct grammar and mechanics so the meaning is clear. ADO 9 (Developing Level) Work in Small Groups Participating, Making Collective Decisions, Supporting Team Members, Managing Conflict, and Evaluating 1. Define task and member roles informally, so most members will understand them and contribute. 2. Establish decision-making procedures informally. 3. Respect team members even members that may not be heard as much as others. 4. Recognize conflict and generally seeks teacher intervention. 5. Evaluate group member’s contributions informally, evaluated primarily by instructor. Grading Scale: ATTENDANCE & PARTICIPATION = 30 % or 3 GRADES added & averaged WITH GPAW GRADE 80 points (4 INCLASS WRITES = 20 points ea.) 80 points (8 CRITIQUES = 10 points ea.) 40 points (Film Reflection) 100 points (4 QUIZZES = 25 points ea.) 100 points (1 ESSAY READING AND 4 EXERCISES 20 points ea.) 50 points (CONCEPT PROPOSAL) 50 points (ARGUMENT PROPOSAL) 500 TOTAL POINTS GRADING SCALE FOR ABOVE ATTENDANCE & PARTICIPATION Grading Scale below for above averaged grade: 500-475 = 4.0 474-427 = 3.5 426-362 = 3.0 361-289 = 2.5 288-216 = 2.0 215-140 = 1.5 139- 84 = .5Three Grades for Participation & Attendance (added & averaged) = Total = 30% Three Grades (4 Typed 2-3 page Essays added & averaged) = Total = 30% Four Grades for Portfolio (added & averaged) = Total = 40% TOTAL = 100% FINAL 3 GRADES ADDED AND AVERAGED FOR FINAL SEMESTER GRADE See Diagram Below: 4 ESSAYS: PERSONAL EXPERIENCE, CHARACTER PROFILE, INFORMATIVE, EDITORIAL ARGUMENT, AND GROUP FILM ESSAY Your Grade Scale WORK HARD GOOD Luck Attendance and Participation = 30% or Three Grades 4 Typed Essays = 40%= 3 Grades Portfolio = 30%=4 GradesStudent Responsibilities: 1. Participation is part of your final grade and reported on line AND YOU MAY BE DROPPED if you do not attend class regularly. After midterm, Your Final grade will be lowered for 3 absences, unreasonable tardiness 20 minutes or more, or leaving early ( .5 deduction for 3 absences, 1.0 deduction for 4 absences, and 5 absences constitutes failure except in extreme hardship cases _speak with me if you have a problem. Illness documentation is required). 2. Reading quizzes may be planned or unannounced. Quizzes essays, and in class writes cannot be made up. (Medical documentation is required). 3. All essays are to be 2-3 pages in length, typed and double spaced, using Times New Roman and a 12’ font (An essay without an Audience and Purpose or is less than 2 pages is a .5 grade deduction. Use MLA (Modern Language Association) for citations inside your essays and attach a work cited page__.5 is deducted for missing or incorrect citations and not acceptable without a Works Cited 4. A PORTFOLIO IS REQUIRED and must be turned on the due date. Late portfolios require medical documentation. STUDENTS DO NOT PASS WITHOUT A PORTFOLIO. 5. Students must be prepared to write, share, and revise their writing in class. Revising continually is required for improving writing. As a result you must be able to transport your electronic work to the classroom and lab. Students are advised to purchase a flash drive. All essays will first require a typed rough draft for teacher review, first revision for
