Jacobs, M.A. E-Mail: [email protected]: St. Martin’s Guide to Writing, 7th EditionCatalog Description: An intensive, personalized writing course designed to meet the needs of students from a wide range of disciplines. Course is designed to help students become comfortable and confident with their writing while working to improve and refine skills. Frequent writing and conferences. Research methodology and documentation included. Also requires 16 hours of Guided Practice and Workshops (GPAW) beyond classroom attendance. Educational Objectives of English 131:1. To provide writing experiences which encourage students to express themselves. These experiences will include not only cognitive activities, but also encourage affective ones.2. To enable students to discover, recognize, and improve their abilities in writing, through exposure to and involvement in varied forms of writing which may include personal narrative, letters, journals, reports, position statements, and interviews.3. To enable students to understand and demonstrate that writing is a process which involves pre-writing techniques, drafting, revising, and editing.4. To enable students to understand the relations between language choices and the intended reader.5. To provide students with writing “survival skills” suitable to academic and occupational communities.6. To introduce students to methods of information gathering and research, and to foster the personal use of these methods and resources for further academic study, occupational activities, and life-long learning.17. To enable students to work productively with others, as members of peer reading/writing groups, learning collaborative strategies in order to successfully completea project.8. To enable students to learn word processing skills in drafting, editing, and polishing writing papers.Student Performance Requirements for Successful Completion of English 131:1. Write and produce a variety of writings, both graded and non-graded (ADO 1a).2. To demonstrate effective use of the writing process (ADO’s 1a).3. Demonstrate ability to organize and develop ideas (ADO 4).4. Learn to recognize form in writing, appropriate to purpose and audience (ADO 1a).5. Participate in responding to and evaluating writing produced by themselves and others(ADO 5).6. Produce writing which uses primary or secondary research (ADO 1a).7. Produce at least one paper which demonstrates basic computer technology skills such as keyboard use, formatting of academic papers, and web navigation for obtaining information (ADO 7).8. Explore one of seven “Transcendent Understandings” defined as Outcomes by the college. Selection determined by the instructor (ADO’s 9-15). The focus for this course is “an understanding of human behavior,” ADO 10.*Students must demonstrate achievement of the Associate Degree Outcomes (ADO) in order to pass the class. Achievement will be demonstrated through essays and conferences, as well as completed components of the research process: approved articles, article summaries, outline of research essay, MLA review.Materials Needed: One college-ruled notebook with perforated pages; one two-pocket folder for writing portfolio; one folder for keeping essay drafts and revisions, as well as research materials; one diskette or memory stick for saving work.Classroom Behavior Policy: Students are expected to show the utmost respect to all others within the classroom by being attentive and listening while others are speaking. Treat others as you wish to be treated. Plan on arriving on time, participating in discussions, and working with others during class time to achieve course goals. Electronic Devices: All electronic devices must be turned off and put away in purse, pocket, bookbag, etc. Electronic devices are not permitted on desks or tables. 2Attendance: Students are expected to attend all class meetings. If more than three meetings are missed, documentation of reasonable excuse will be needed in order to continue and pass the class. Academic Honesty Policy: It is each student’s responsibility to read and follow the Academic Honesty Policy, as found in the JCC Student Handbook. Plagiarism and cheating are not tolerated.Special Needs: Students requiring adjustments due to disability must inform the instructor and present documentation before reasonable adjustments can be made. Course Requirements:16 Hours of Guided Practice and Workshops (GPAW) 10%In-class activities, conferences, workshop participation, final presentation 20%Papers (4) 40%Remembered EventRemembered Person 30%ProfileResearch 70%Portfolio (see requirements) 30%All of the above components of the class will be scored using the Jackson Community College 4 point grading scale. Students must achieve 2.0 or better to pass this class*All assignments must be completed and turned in on time. Papers and Portfolio must becompleted using word processor. Exceptions will only be made with documentation of reasonable excuse, or at the instructor’s discretion. Further, all assignments and the portfolio must be completed in order to pass the class.**Eight of the GPAW hours must be completed by midterm.***Students must bring three copies of their completed drafts to writing workshops for feedback from classmates. Workshop participation counts as four times the credit received for normal class activity. Be sure to be in class and have your drafts on workshop days to ensure you do not lose this credit.3****Research activities and related assignments are due in class as assigned, and count asfour times the credit received for normal class activity. Research activities and assignments include approved articles, article summaries, outline, and Works Cited draft.*****Conferences are mandatory and count as four times the credit received for normal class activity. Be prepared for conferences by bringing required elements and list of questions. ******Final presentations will count as four times the credit received for normal class activity.
