Grading Attendance ConferencesEnglish 131.27: Writing Experience Fall Semester, 2007 Thursday, 6:00—8:56 p.m. August 23rd—December 13th This syllabus is subject to revision! Instructor: Rochelle Sayler Email: [email protected] or [email protected] or [email protected] About Office Hours: I am on campus Tuesday and Thursday evenings. The best way to reach me is by e-mail or cell phone. I will be more than happy to meet with you outside of class, but you MUST make an appointment. Course Description This is an intensive writing course designed to help students improve, strengthen and refine writing skills. Research methods are introduced. An end of the semester portfolio of narrative and informative writings and an additional 16 hours of writing activities and workshops are required. (Prerequisites: Eng 080 and Eng 090) Textbooks Writing: A Guide for College and Beyond—Brief Edition by Lester Faigley ?? The Brief Penguin Handbook, 2ed edition by Lester Faigley ?? Practicing Peer Review and Researching Online (“What Every Student Should Know Series”) Other Supplies Pens/Pencils Notebook for notes and in class assignments Two folders: one for G-PAW assignments; one for final portfolio Jump drive/flash drive (way to save essays electronically) Performance Objectives 1. Students will understand and practice the process of writing. 2. Students will be aware of the purpose and audience for each of their written works. 3. Students will learn to read critically and give helpful feedback to their classmates. 4. Students will complete numerous written assignments to become more comfortable with writing and to incorporate writing into their daily lives. Eng 131 course goals and objectives incorporate specific Associate Degree Outcomes (ADOs) established by the JCC Board of Trustees, administration, and faculty. These goals are in concert with four-year colleges and universities and reflect input from the professional communities we serve. ADOs addressed in this course are as follows: Writing Clearly, Concisely and Intelligibly (Developing Level), ADO #1 Working in Small Groups (Developing Level), ADO #9 GPAW InformationAll students enrolled in a writing course at JCC must complete a total of sixteen hours of additional guided practice in composition, called Guided Practice Activities and Workshops (GPAW), outside of classroom time. Since GPAW work closely corresponds to classroom writing assignments, students are expected to complete assigned workshops at the times specified on the course calendar. How to access G-PAW: (You need an internet connection and PowerPoint to open files) Go to JCC webpage (www.jccmi.edu) Click on Academics-Departments Scroll down to Language, Literature & Arts Click on the section in the bottom left hand corner entitled “Click here for Information on GPAW workshops” Sign-In to GPAW (use GPAW log-in assistance if you are having trouble) Click on “Information and Sign-up Sheet” in the upper left hand corner Look under “ENG 131” for specific G-PAW Do the Activities; print the last slide (the one that says print and turn in to instructor) Grading 30 out of 100 points for your course grade will be earned by doing in-class writing and drafting, revising and editing drafts of three major assignments. 24 out of 100 points will be from quizzes/participation/attendance. 30 out of 100 points will come from your portfolio. 16 out of the 100 points of your grade will be earned by completing guided learning credits (see below). 30 in-class writing, drafting, revising and editing drafts of three major assignments 24 quiz grades/participation points/attendance 30 portfolio 16 guided learning credits (GPAW) 100 points total Grading Scale Total points Grade Total points Grade 93-100 4.0 71-77 2.0 (pass the class) 88-92 3.5 64-70 1.5 83-87 3.0 56-63 1.0 78-82 2.5 48-55 0.5 Course Policies Academic Honesty is expected of all students. It is the ethical behavior that includes producing your own work, and not representing others’ work as your own, either by plagiarism, by cheating, or by helping others to do so. Honesty also includes taking responsibility for your actions. There is a zero-tolerance policy for plagiarism. If you plagiarize material, the penalty can be a failing grade in the course. The JCC Academic Honesty Policy is posted on the home page.Attendance You must be in class in order to do in-class writings, and to learn from participation in class discussions and in group work. Let me know if you will need to miss a class BEFORE the class meeting (phone or e-mail). (I realize this isn’t always possible, but please make the effort!) Because this is a one night a week class, you many only miss ONE class period before a lowering of your grade will occur. If you miss more than three class periods, you will not pass my class. Two missed class periods-highest grade possible is a B. Three missed class periods-highest grade possible is a C (and passing). Four or more-failing grade, and you must retake the class. If you miss two weeks of class in a row and I have not heard from you, you will be dropped from the class. WEATHER: Please check the local radio station to check if class has been cancelled. Assume class is meeting unless you hear otherwise. Points will also be deducted for arriving late and leaving early. My goal is for you to be successful in this class. My experience has shown me that students who don’t attend the classes are generally not successful in class, and those who attend each class have the most chance at success. Participation It is expected that students will participate in class discussions and peer group discussions. Everyone will get more out of the class if I am not the only one discussing the subject. Class participation makes our time together much more interesting and valuable to everyone, including me. Participation points will be deducted when students do not participate either vocally or through body language, have obviously not prepared for class, disrupt the class, sleep, or do other things besides this class’s work. Cell Phone Use Your cell phones should be turned off or silenced (not on vibrate-it’s still distracting!) when in the classroom. Please finish your call before entering the room. If you must make a call during break, please
