Kristen Morreale BSCI105 Freshman Connection Bess FC02 Oct 21 2012 Two Americans by the names of Robert J Lefkowitz and Brian K Kobilka won the Nobel Prize in chemistry for 2012 These scientists discovered ways that G protein coupled receptors have influenced scientific knowledge of how cells sense certain signals within and outside of the human body This study is key to creating different drugs which can reach to certain proteins outside of the human body Medicines react on the G protein coupled receptors in order to send a signal out to the body to help fight off different viruses and bacteria This topic is one of great importance We know from BSCI105 that G protein coupled receptors are protein within the cell on its surface which is activated by ATP changing GDP to GTP and thus making the protein active This allows for a protein to bind change shape and send out a different signal This information helps us understand that the two men responsible or finding ways to have this cell interact with outside sources help aid in medical advances The medicines can now find a way to activate this G Protien receptor with a specific ligand in the medicine and allow it to carry on a reaction to certain proteins in order to signal against the sickness
