Due Week 3 Day 4 Think of an organization with which you are familiar How has that organization s ethical policies changed as the result of external pressure Provide two examples Your answer should be between 100 150 words Healthcare reform has been a hot topic in the last few years My company is a Group Purchasing Organization GPO that negotiates contracts with suppliers to reduce cost for goods for their participating members Legislation has tried to limit the monetary funds returned to GPO s for their contribution to reduced healthcare With the increased scrutiny on organizations like ours we have had to limit the relationships with suppliers If with a supplier we must pay or split the costs but cannot have the supplier pay for events or dinners We must also not speak to suppliers about client situations or their intent on using their products These limitations reduce the ability to negotiate better prices that ultimately reduce healthcare costs Response 2 I work for a local city government and we are always having to be conscious of our actions and how the public perceives us and our fiscal responsibility to our citizens In the past few years our organization s policies have changed regarding travel and training There are many educational and professional seminars all over the country and some very large industry conferences that many in my organization really benefit from attending However in recent times unless these events are directly within our city limits we cannot attend The public perception in these troubling economic times has changed our policies on travel and attending these very useful seminars and conferences A few particular conferences were the Roads Streets and World of Concrete in Tucson AZ and the ESRI GIS conference in San Diego These conferences provide so many benefits to what we do for our customers and help us to keep current and serve our citizens with the most up to date and knowledgeable service However we can no longer go to either of these because the public might perceive it as unnecessary travel or wasteful spending Another area were policies have changed is attending events lunches and holiday functions with other governmental agencies or other organizations Again the reasoning behind these new policies is due to external pressure from the citizens and news organizations looking for any angle to make news or comment on unethical government practices If we attend a lunch with a consultant or contractor we must certainly be up to no good or getting bribed So external factors are taken very seriously within my organization and policies are subject to change anytime its deemed necessary
