company that created a website forum titled The Responsibility Project to showcase social responsibility awareness This forum presents articles and short films about social responsibility situations and how the world interacts with them Liberty Mutual has a slogan on the website about doing the right thing we work hard to do the right thing Just like you We also know that s not always a matter of black and white Liberty Mutual 2011 p 1 The company goes on to state the purpose of this website as a place to think about and discuss what it means to do the right thing Liberty Mutual 2011 p 1 Team D has composed four of these videos that inspired us Here are their stories Derek s Portion Freedom Riders Vol 1 was a film about a 12 year old White girl who witnessed an angry White mob in Alabama in 1961 set fire to a bus that transported Whites and Blacks together The angry mob didn t believe Blacks should be riding the same bus as Whites A White girl witnessed this event and offers water and help to the people on the bus The mob sees this and is angered the girl knew the mob would be but still chose to help despite what the mob may have done The newly released film The Help is why I choose this short film This was a powerful movie about women of color working as nannies in the south during the sixties and the torment and inequality they went through in raising the White children of their employers The movie was uncomfortable at times to watch because of the unbelievable treatment of human beings In the movie a young White writer writes a book about the view from the nanny s perspective This movie was still fresh in my mind and that fact compelled me to choose this film Lori s Portion Lesster is a short film about a family that has two very different views on what it means to save the earth The character Lesster is a made up solar powered superhero that sees the world differently from adults The short film s plot is set around a family s interactions before an Earth day parade The film illustrates how the parents view the little boy as not caring but this is not the case The little boy just sees things a little differently In the end the little boy saves the day and goes around correcting the wasteful acts of his parents This film was appealing because of the two underlying themes of the film The first was more in at the forefront of the film and was about saving the earth The second was more subtle and was in the background about how children see the world differently This was appealing because in this the little boy saw the bigger picture He realized that saving the earth did not require Congress or a law to be changed but it started with what he could change at home He realized that one simple change of a habit could fuel much larger changes Danielle s Portion Freedom Riders volume 3 The Exchange Student is a short film about a man named Jim Zwerg who went against segregation when segregation was at an extreme Jim was a White male who was a part of a group who believed that segregation prejudice and discrimination were wrong Jim fought hard to make people see each other as humans rather than as Blacks and Whites At one point he had to be hospitalized when attacked for fighting for African Americans freedom I was drawn to this video because I felt as if this short film showed determination courage and hope When segregation was at a high point Jim went against the hate and was friends with many Blacks Jim Zwerg thought what was going on with segregation was wrong and he tried to do something about it He was brutally beaten for standing up for what he believed The message portrayed in this story is why I choose this film Pam s Portion This project is about Lidia Bastianich a renowned chef author and restaurant owner reflecting on how responsibility guides each aspect of her business Her philosophy is food is the basis for life Food is art and communicates the message of love affection and caring She believes that food is the entrance to every part of our lives She opened her first restaurant Bona Via hired a chef but realized that he was cooking Italian American rather than traditional Italian She believed she wanted to share her authentic cuisine with her new homeland and so she began to introduce more authentic dishes on the menu My reason for choosing this film is I saw impressed by her passion and success at promoting an authentic cuisine and staying committed to that mission Serving genuine Italian food is very important to Lidia because she believes that food communicates sentiments and an identification of culture Her success and assertiveness impressed me She has eight restaurants seven books and has hosted cooking shows for years David s Portion I chose the film describing how food can bring together generations and family members The film about Lidia Bastianich is an inspiring demonstration how families can come together over a meal and bring joy to one another I have found this story inspirational even more lately as I spend time with my fianc and her two children One is 11 and the other child is 13 The 11 year old girl is eager to expand cooking skills We have found cooking together brings us closer together We joke learn and explore new foods that neither of us have had experience with The film discusses how family does not just include immediate family Employees and customers of the restaurant are equally important to Lidia Bring her Italian heritage to her restaurant cooking shows and books is very important to Lidia Most joyful events involve food in which she makes with a tremendous amount of pride I want our family to embrace different cultures and that begins with learning about their food It also is a good way to spend more time as a family In conclusion Liberty Mutual is an insurance company that showcased what it meant to do the right thing and be socially responsible The company created a forum that included articles and short films that showcased social responsibility awareness The four films that appealed to Team D the most were Freedom Riders Vol 1 Lesster Freedom Riders Vol 3 and Responsibility and
