Due Week 1 Day 4 One of your friends uses the terms ethics and morality interchangeably You do not think this is correct How would you explain the difference between ethics and morality Provide an example of morality and one of ethics in your explanation Your answer should be between 100 150 words Ethics is the science concerning the right and wrong of human action page 57 Morality is the right and wrong being studied Peter Singer says the ethical needn t be the factual It might be unethical that is a breach of a particular code for doctors to sleep with their patients but it s possible that there are circumstances where no one would call it immoral 2006 http www philosophyblog com au ethics vs morality the distinction between ethics and morals para 3 Morality is often the result of a person s religious and or cultural beliefs It is a personal code Ethics are a result of society s decisions about what is right or wrong It is a societal code that encompasses many individual moral codes Another example would be abortion Many religions view abortion as immoral a violation of God s word Yet society has taken the ethical stance that abortion is okay in many circumstances that human life is not life until it is born Therefore what is moral or immoral to me may not be to you and may or not be ethical Response 2 I agree with a comment you shared in a previous response that Most agree morality is more of a personal construct and ethics a group construct As they seem to run in parallel it would seem possible either might influence the other They are both centered around what is right and wrong but morality is more centered around what a persons own belief of right and wrong is and ethics is centered around what is socially accepted as a standard of what is right and wrong I think of morality as ones own value and belief system that governs how they act and interact with others and society around them This belief or value system is ingrained in who they are as a person it comes from their upbringing and life experiences When I think of ethics I think of a socially accepted value system or set of beliefs rules or code of conduct that is viewed by society as what s acceptable or what s deemed right verses what s wrong For example you might have the moral influence to treat another fairly when conducting a business transaction but you are also expected socially to conduct yourself in a fair trustworthy socially acceptable manner as well
