Hist 109 1st Edition Lecture 21Current Lecture1906 Cananea Strike1907 Rio Blanco Strike- at a textile mill. Majority of workers are women that go on strike.Biggest concern is that they don’t have a set work schedule. Want 12 hour work day. Want an improvement in wages.Specific complaints to textile mill:- Workers had to pay for depreciation of machinery they worked on. - Protest child laborDiaz does not respond to this. As a result, the women go on strike and direct anger to the company storeand tear up account books. Police that respond to this trap the women in the store and are burned alive. The other group shot as they escape the store. These events are disastrous for Diaz and people in the working class hear of this and identify.The Anti-Reelection Campaign: The Failure of Political Reform- Feb 1908 Creelman Interview- American journalist interviews Diaz. Diaz says he won’t run for presidency- The Presidential Succession of 1910 by Francisco Madero (1908)- Madero forms a political party to convince the general Mexican population that it’s bad to have incumbency policies. Labels his party the “Anti-Reelection party”- Plan of San Luis Potosi- an arrest warrant for Madero- Diaz bans Madero’s party and Madero has to flee into exile into Texas area.- Madero declares elections of 1910 null and void as his party has been banned. - Madero declares himself president as Diaz is not legitimate.The Revolution to Remove Diaz- Northern theater of the war- From the political to the militaryPancho Villa- Joins Madero in 1910- Doroteo Arango aka Pancho Villa- becomes most famous Pancho Villa.- Social Banditry- very strategic in robbing people. Never touched American businesses. Taking away from the rich and giving to the poor. Built up a large following.Emiliano Zapata- represents peasants who want their lands restored- Fights for Restoration of Peasant Lands- Local based indigenous movement in the state of Morelos.- Community leader whose primary language was Nahuatl- Zapata sees Madero similar to Diaz but does not join Madero’s forces- Remains tied to indigenous roots The Fall of Diaz, May 1911- Mexican Rev. ends very quickly- Capture of Juarez- border city captured showing that Diaz is incapable of holding the city. Madero’s army does this.o Pascual Orozco- Diaz has turned 80 and elects retirement in place of fighting out revolution. Summary of Lecture- Diaz’s prophetic last words: Madro has unleashed a tiger, see if you can tame it. Madero perhapspromised too much to the people. - The movement to remove Diaz from power became transformed into a political and social
