Hist 109 1st Edition Lecture 16Current LectureNapoleonic Invasion of Iberia- Napoleon comes to power, invades Iberian peninsula. Separates crown powers from Brazil. - Occupation of Portugal (1807)o Royal family in exile to Rio de Janeiro- King goes to Brazil. Portugal now occupied by the French and goes to Brazil.- Charles IV abdication in favor of Ferdinand VII (1808). Create a govt of exile though within country. - Napoleon’s brother Joseph placed on the Spanish Throne. Wants to create a new dynastic family. - Creates a crisis for Latin America. No longer have a legitimate crown so therefore are not tied to Europe. How will Latin America be governed during the Iberian Occupation? What happens when there is no longer a sovereign king. Now sovereignty returns to the people. People claim govt authority for themselves.- Local juntas (1808). These are created as local political orgs.- Cortes/Spanish Parliament (1810-14) Have local elections where they can send representatives to Europe. Spanish still want ties to their colonies- 1812 Constitution- Spain’s written during govt in exile. Colonists now have a lot of leverage. Spain now needs colonies and they abolish all distinctions between peninsulares and creoles. Recognize mixed race people. - 1814 Return to Absolutist Rule.Mexico’s two movements for Independence:- Phase I: The peasant uprisingo Mass movement (1810-15). Involves everyone o Hidalgo’s Grito de Dolores (1810)- leads the movement with a proclamation. Was a priestand addresses people in Nahuatl in the indigenous language. o Jose Maria Morelos- Phase II: White Creole Movement in Mexicoo Peninsular-Creole Unity. Creates a bond between them. Become the local elite.o Elimination of Peasant Forceso Independence in 1821 when they eventually defeat the Spanish forces The Argentine Crole Military MovementThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
