HIST 109 1st Edition Lecture 10Jamaican Maroons- From Spain to Britain, 1655- Turn it into a wealthy sugar based economy, very profitable- Numerous attempts by British to conquer Jamaicans in the mountains- Expansion with Military campaigns in 1730s but all failJamaican Maroons win their Freedom- 1739 Peace treaty- between Jamaican Maroons and British governoro suing for peace- the British are requesting peace treaty and end runawayo Maroons invited to Spanishtown, the British capital to sign but decline and make British come up to the mountains- Provision of the Treatyo Freedom- Maroons want freedom recognizedo Market Goods- ability to market goods. Buy and sell their products No new recruits, only from within the colony. o Return runaways- Maroons will honor treaty and return runaways to Britisho Aid in defense- drafted into defense of the colony- Second Maroon War of 1795o Outbreak of War- confrontation happens at market. Maroons begin to offend white colonists and are arrested for disorderly conduct and put in jail and punished. Publicly whipped. They were treated like slaves which was the biggest problem the Maroons had despite admission of being guilty. British sent an expedition to Maroon mountains. o Exported to Nova Scotia- used Maroons to colonize this areao Petition to go to Sierra Leone 1800- sent here despite being born free in Jamaica.o Says them they’ve been contaminated with freedomSummary of Lecture:- Enslaved Africans tailored their individual and collective resistance strategies to their New World environment. They try to arrange a marriage for her but she refused and went to convent. Becomes an influential writer. She writes that men exceed them but she says that she knows men wishes she didn’t know so
