Remember, no “right” definitions 1. Our definition: “A network of people who live together over long periods of time bound bytes of marriage, blood, or commitment, legal or otherwise” 2. Here, informal adoption would account as family - made it legal, it would not count II. Family SystemA. We will talk about1. Family structure2. Power-authority structure - ability to influence other family members- Position structure - one person holds all power - Person-oriented structure - everyone has equal power, democracy -Consensus - everyone agrees, good because everyone has a say, bad because it could be time consuming - Accommodation - even though power is equally distributed some people give into others - De facto - no one makes the decision, environmental factors make he decision for you- Can have in betweens C. Interaction structures 1. Communication network- Centralized- one person in family who is center of communication, all communication flows through the central hub, people are talking to the central person who is relaying the information out - Decentralized - everyone is talking to everyoneD. Characteristics of family structures1. Boundaries - have to do (in part) with openness of communication 2. Internal boundaries - between the members of the family - range from enmeshed (open with what they share with each other, no privacy, no secretes) to disengaged (closed, communication between family members doesn't exist), boundaries differ between people - son disengaged, while mom and daughter are enmeshed 3. External boundaries - boundary between all of the people i the family and everyone who is not considered part of the family - range from open (everything shared) -closed (not comfortable with sharing and communicating out of your family at all)4. Random boundaries - both internal and external boundaries can be defined in terms of random, your boundaries change quickly and without notice III. Functions of the family A. Internal - what family members do for each other 1. Providing care2. Socialization3. Intellectual développement4. Recreation5. Emotional support B. External - outside world1. Transmission - teaching kids to be productive members of society 2. Accommodation - accommodating cultural changes, ex. new technology IV. Family communication patternsA. Rules1. Regulative - tell you what behavior you can and cant do- Obligatory - rules about behaviors that you must do, ex. family may say you have to use a fork and knife to eat, you must brush your teeth before bed - Prohibited - things you are not allowed to do, ex. can’t hit your brother, can’t swear/drink/stay out past curfew - Appropriate - tell you what behavior would be nice if you did it but you are not obligated to do it, ex. not going to make you go to church but it would be appropriate and like if you did 2. Constitutive - determine meaning of behavior, either stand alone or be used in harmony with previous rules, ex. hittingyour brother means you dont care, staying out past your curfew is
