What are roles?A. Positions1.Locations on the social map2. For example: occupational, family placement, age, sex, prestige, associational groupingsB. Roles1. Behavioral expectations associated with roles2. Roles are: learned, generalize guidelines (don’t have set script, get general ways on how to play roles) , affect beliefs about self, multiple II. Role rigidity (have a difficult time switching from one role to the next) These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. Support we receive for the role (financial support- parents pay for tuition, emotional support, coach supports you in your sport) 2. Social comparison theory - theory of comparison between people Upward - comparison between you and someone who is better than you in a given social role, could serve as motivatorDownward - comparison between you and someone who doing worse than you in that roleLateral - comparison between you and someone who is on your same level, equivalent role, could make you feel normal B. Commitment - how important/sure you are that this is the role for you 1. Self-perception theory - don’t always make commitments before we start engaging in a role, only after we have invested time and energy we look back at what we havedone and see if we want to stick with it, ex. go to MSU, look back after 2 years and look at akl the effort you have put in and realize that the role must be important to youC. Rewards - rewarded for our role, more likely to persuade it IV. Goffman’s Role TheoryA. Face: how we want others to perceive us and our worth (self that we present in social situations) 1. Negative face - our desire to be independent, don’t want others to fringe upon our rights/independence 2. Positive face - our desire to be valued/respected B. Face threats - other people can hurt/damage our negative/positive face1. To negative face - damage autonomy/ independence 2. To positive face - someone making you feel less valued/respected 3. Consequences of face threats - makes you feel bad, experience negative emotions such as anger, sadness, embarrassment, desire to repair/fix faceV. Goffman’s Role Theory: Facework (managing face) A. Saving faceB. Preventive facework - when you know what could threaten their face and try to say it differently/ or not as harsh1. e.g./ hedging C. Corrective facework - face already threatened, what do you do? 1. Defensive (your face that has been threatened) 2. Protective (some others face that has been threatened) Examples of both: humor; apologies; accountsHow have you eloped someone save face?D.
