On foreign policy pending legislation and women s political participation Marry Smith Cranch is frustrated with the political climate She talks about the deabte over paper mone lawyers and the court common pleas in Massachusetts state legislature On her frustration with the Massachesetts state legislature she explains how shes thankful there is a senate and a house and she also doesn t have time to write to her niece On commenting on Shay s Rebellion she talks about the growing unrest regarding Shay s Rebellion and she expresses concern about the country s direction towards monarchy or anarchy She also talks about how the college company wants to defend the government On further thoughts on Shay s Rebellion Mary Smith Cranch describes the efforts to stop the rebellion and the challenges that the milita faced because they didn t have much money She talks about the impact on community and the local response to Shay s Rebellion These letters show me that women had a desire for influence in politics and they were aware and engaged in political events of their time The letters also show a real concern for the welfare and stability of the nation
