Events that Challenged the Jeffersonian Vision of Independence 1800 1860 Favoring the Federalist Party by Alexander Hamilton Could say Second Great Awakening N Hamilton s Economic Program Hamilton established the first financial system in America He wanted to build the power of the national government and tie commercial interest of the national government to the commercial sector of the economy He planned to do this by taking over the debt of states from the American Revolution protective tariffs on goods excising the tax on whiskey and establishing a National bank Louisiana Purchase 1803 The purchase of the land itself shows a strong national government unlike the Jeffersonian View that calls for small national government In addition the Louisiana Purchase put the country in more debt while Jefferson was trying to reduce national debt at the time N Marbury vs Madison 1803 Marbury vs Madison was the first Supreme Court case to apply the principle of judicial review the power of federal courts to void acts of Congress in conflict with the Constitution Written in 1803 by Chief Justice John Marshall the decision played a key role in making the Supreme Court a separate branch of government on par with Congress and the executive 1808 Embargo tried free trade didn t work US refused to trade with Britain or France in order to stay neutral however the Act backfired and had adverse effects on the economy This proves that more government control is necessary Tecumseh resisted expansion N McCulloch vs Maryland 1819 federal government is supreme cannot be taxed by states In McCulloch v Maryland 1819 the Supreme Court ruled that Congress had implied powers under the Necessary and Proper Clause to create the National bank and that the state of Maryland did not have the power to tax the Bank giving the National government power Erie Canal and Irish Workers Jefferson wanted a country of his ideal citizen that s a subsistence farmer The immigrants are wage workers that are forever dependent on businesses so they will never fit Jefferson s mold Jackson s Bank Veto 1832 caused unneeded economic growth Jackson s actions have an unintended consequence now the banks have an infusion of money the banks loan out the money His actions accelerate the actions he was fighting The Election of 1860 Lincoln is elected
