Reconstruction 1865 1877 The Radical Republicans in the north who won the election wanted to punish the south Johnson s Plan 1865 May 1865 the New President made a declaration pushing the Democratic agenda that he was not supposed to be supporting when he was elected to be Vice President Johnson s plan was very lenient towards the south and he pardoned them on many of the actions they were supposed to take after the war Most northerners were not supportive of this plan however it was issued after congress had already left for the season Black Codes 1865 1866 substitute for slavery power over labor Andrew Johnson s Plan allowed southern states to continue slavery even though it was technically illegal Southern states used loopholes to get around the law Election of 1866 Radical Republicans are in office With the disenfranchisement of Southern Whites the Republicans used the freedmen and their own numbers to seize control of The Southern States and proceed with their plans for reconstruction Reconstruction Act of 1867 This act was the reconstruction do over that divided the south into 5 military districts proving that southern states really did not have governments The Reconstruction Act also outlined how new governments based on manhood suffrage without regard to race were to be established 14th Amendment 1868 Defines all people born in the United States as citizens requires due process of law and requires equal protection to all people Klu Klux Klan Acts 1870 1871 The KKK act was enacted by the federal government in 1870 to deal with the problem of the Klan s violent actions against Republicans and African Americans in the south and keeping Republicans away from the voting booths This temporarily successful act made interfering with voting a federal felony punishable by law and stated that the president has the authority to enforce the act Slaughterhouse cases 1873 The first Supreme Court interpretation of the 14th amendment which defined citizenship This case ruling stated that there was a difference between federal citizenship and state citizenship Great Strike of 1877 The Great Strike of 1877 was the shift that helped undermine reconstruction with factory workers and wage earning workers leaving their jobs in mass amounts in one of the biggest strikes in American history and it caused the economies of several northern states to collapse By the end the North got tired and gave up on the punishment of the South
