The End of Slavery 1829 1877 Nullification Crisis 1832 If nullification is okay and the north passes a law against slavery the south will ignore that law Southerners felt unfairly taxed they needed manufactured products from Europe Europe was angry about this so they retaliated with taxes on southern crops Andrew Jackson passed the force bill Wilmot Proviso introduces an amendment to ban slavery in Mexican territories didn t pass Slavery is prohibited in the new territories acquired from Mexico This is the first antislavery proposal to attract broad popular support Compromise of 1850 no slave trade in DC gave southern states the fugitive slave law but territories can vote Stalled the civil war by including provisions that made both the North and the South happy The South had the Fugitive Slave Law requiring Free states governments to help return fugitive slaves to their masters and the North got popular sovereignty in the Mexican territories that could open the possibility to slavery there Dred Scott 1857 The case of Dred Scott said that slaves can t sue and slavery must be respected nationwide The north was angry about this ruling and it put northerners against slavery more and more and they are increasingly angry about the federal laws that force them to accept slavery John Brown 1859 slave uprisings John Brown A radical abolitionist led a guerilla war to end slavery that puts the south in a state of panic because they fear future attacks similar to this Confiscation act July 1862 Act stating that if a slave runs away to the Union Army they are free Militia Act 1862 authorizes states to raise black troops Introducing the use of contracted black workers into the Civil War It authorized states to raise black troops and granted those black soldiers who fought emancipation if their former masters were rebels th Amendment 1865 13 Ended slavery Civil rights act of 1866 protected emancipated slaves from discriminatory state laws enacted after the Civil War known as the Black Codes Slaughterhouse cases 1873 Stated that there was a difference between federal citizenship and state citizenship Undermines the 14th and 15th amendment Slavery is technically dead but this case undermines what ended it
