AFTER THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION Women o NJ supported the idea of womens suffrage If women owned land they could vote o 1844 women weren t allowed to vote anymore by constitution of the state o Expected to raise and educate children to become virtuous citizens of the nation o Seen as the same as indentured servants freedom could be attained after work o After end of 1600s slavery was starting to be practiced lost hope for freedom o South primarily because of the high level of agriculture and work demand African Americans NW Ordinance 1787 o Charge settlers for land that was in the Ohio River Valley o Money made off of the land would help pay for the war Articles of confed didn t allow govt to tax citizens only colonies could Republicanism and American virtue o 1783 1789 o Romantic visions of roman democracy o The goodness of the common man o Emotional attachment to nation Problems with articles of confederation o Shea s rebellion o CENTRAL GOVT CANT TAX Constitutional convention 1787 Virginia plan by James Madison large state plan o More powerful central govt o Two house legislature senate house o Push the articles aside and come up with something totally new Both determined by population they don t stick with this o Judiciary no one defined what the judiciary branch is supposed to do judiciary review comes later o Single executive president could back up laws veto o Fed govt should have power to tax New Jersey Plan o Single house not based on pop one vote each o Federal judiciary o Single or plural executive elected by congress o Fed govt should have power to tax Great Compromise Slavery o Two house legislature senate house one by pop one equal o Not stipulated in the constitution but states like Virginia wanted slaves to be counted for population purposes o 3 5ths compromise 3 of every 5 slaves will be counted as a person Executive branch voting as they wanted to o Elections organized at state level however electoral college is formed so there isn t mob o Every 4 years there will be an election for president but they could run as many times George Washington set prescient with 2 terms by resigning however a law wasn t formed til late 20th century Judicial branch o Supreme court The federalists the federalist papers o Want constitution o Want strong central government Much debate The Bill of rights o Protect the citizens Ratification for more states to follow o From anti federalists want more state rights o Thomas Jefferson power to the states power to the farmer o Good group of states that ratify the constitution right away which sets the ball rolling
